Many of my kids are cutting those 6 year molars and find chewing/sucking their fingers a convenient source of comfort. However, we have many germs in here and, while I am constantly sending them to wash their hands or to keep their hands/fingers out of their mouth, words often fall on deaf ears. Their fingers go from their nose or mouth to the carpet, etc. A word of reminder from home would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Surprise!!!! Snow greeted us this morning! I told my husband that I knew of 24 very excited little Kindergarteners this morning! I can only imagine the squeals in your houses this morning.
Here’s what’s coming up next week…
READING/WRITING THEME-Harvest and Thanksgiving
LETTERS-R r E e Make sure that your child can make the sounds of the letters, as well as read and write the letters. Sounds are VERY important to reading and writing.
WORDS-It it Is is (Following on last week’s word in) Your child should know the i sound, since we had that letter/sound the week of 10/22. “Make the i sound. Now make the t sound. Slide the sounds together. Do the same for is. ” These words should be very easy for them. Add these word cards to their word card bank. Spread the cards out on the floor. Make a sentence with the words.
WRITING-Informational about TURKEYS.
PHONICS/WRITING- Final Sounds.
MATH-Geometry Naming shapes, describing the shapes (“A rectangle has 4 sides, 2 long sides and 2 short sides, and 4 corners.”)
Describe a triangle, circle.
We will also work with Positional words.
SCIENCE-Seasons
Tuesday & Thursday are Evening Conferences Reminder notes were sent home last week. Last evening I met with 8 families and I enjoyed sharing their child’s successes with their parents.
Wednesday is LIBRARY DAY.
Remember the Weekly Book Bags. The kids are doing a great job with their home reading. I am pleased with their reading and they are moving up in their reading levels. They are each working on different strategies and applying them to reading. I can tell when they read at home. Thank you for your support at home. It shows. Now I know why my private flute teacher could always tell when I had practiced a lot during the week and when I wasn’t as faithful with daily practice!
WEATHER INFORMATION:
With the snowy weather upon us, students need to wear boots to school and carry their shoes in their backpack. I told them that it it their responsibility to put their shoes in the backpack at night. (Parents often get blamed for “not putting my shoes in my backpack.”) They will take off their wet boots in the hall and change into their shoes. If they wear wet shoes into the room, they track in wet snow on their shoes, and then sit in the wetness on the carpet. Wet shoes on 24 kids creates a very wet carpet on which to sit! YUK! Even if there is only a little bit of snow on the pavement, students are to still wear their boots into school. Several mentioned today that they did not have boots that fit. I told them that they could go out this weekend and get a pair…perfect time. It’s also a perfect time to practice tying shoes!
Enjoy the snow and all of the wonder it brings.

Wednesday’s homework
Author: Sandra SmithNov 5
Since we have NO SCHOOL TOMORROW, I told the students that they have homework tonight.
- Be able to tell me on Wednesday morning what our letters and words are for this week. (Go on my blog to find out the answer.)
- Give me a sentence using “We can go in the ___________.” Complete the sentence with a place that a nocturnal animal would live. We did this in class today. We created a word web about where nocturnal animals would go. Then I had them each write their own sentence. Each week I am building on the previous week’s words. Please have your child create and write a sentence or two.
Thank you.

Today we tried something new…PARTNER WRITING!
Since we already know the sight words I can go to the
we created our own partner sentences using those words.
We enjoyed staying focused on the assignment and creating good sentences.
Here’s a peek…
I couldn’t get all of the partners because they were finishing up their sentences so quickly! Sorry 🙁

Week of October 29, 2018
Author: Sandra SmithOct 30
Another busy week in Kindergarten! Our theme is still Halloween/Fall.
LETTERS-L l N n
WORDS-Go go to
READING COMPREHENSION-Sequencing This is a very important strategy when retelling or writing a story. Things/events need to be in the correct order. After reading a story, ask your child to retell the story to you. Characters should have names, stories have settings (where is the story taking place) and then the events in the order in which they happened.
MATH-We will finish up our first Module in our Math curriculum. We have been working with Counting and Cardinality ( the number of objects in a given set or objects). Your child should be able to count, read and write numbers up to 30. Practice at home. Count as you are walking up steps, out to the car, down a hall, up the driveway, etc. Any place, anytime…count! Instead of a video game or watching tv, have them write the numbers while they are waiting for dinner. Practice makes perfect.
Wednesday is Halloween!! We are very excited. Students are to come to school in regular school clothes, costumes in a bag. They will have lunch, a noon recess, back with me for about half of an hour and then I will help get them into costumes. They will then go to Music from 12;55-1;40. The All-School Parade will follow at 1:40 outside, around the track. Parents are invited to watch the parade. Bring your cameras! We are very cute!! Afterwards I will bring my kids back into the room to continue our day with some treats from our homeroom moms.
FRIDAY IS HALF DAY FOR STUDENTS-Dismissal will be at 11:45.
Enjoy tomorrow night with the cutest little pumpkins ever!!

Firefighter Pelty visits
Author: Sandra SmithOct 25
Today we had a visit from Avery Pelty’s dad, Firefighter Pelty. We learned a lot about fire prevention, what the parts of his uniform are called and things we should do as family to keep safe. We need to make sure that our houses have a smoke detector, a carbon monoxide detector, and our families need an outside meeting place in case of a fire. We also learned NOT to go back in for any toys or pets. We’ll leave that job to the firefighters. If we are in our bedrooms when a fire occurs, we can throw toys out of the window to let the firefighters know that someone is in that room.
Thank you firefighter Pelty for teaching us about fire safety, since October is Fire Prevention Month.
Here some pictures of Firefighter Pelty’s time with us.
