Week of March 4, 2019

Welcome March!

March is READING MONTH and your child is bring home some information about activities here at Howard.  Please feel welcome to sign up to read to our class.  Sigh up sheet is in my room.

Here’s what’s happening in our room next week…

READING/WRITING –Narrative Writing!  We will write a story ( a narrative) about a penguin that gets lost.  Hummmm  It will include the 4 elements of any story-character, setting, plot/problem, and solution.

SPELLING-The students’ scores really came up this week in Spelling.  Every day, they each worked with a partner practicing the words.  I modeled how to help another student learn something.  As you can tell from their tests, I am being particular about the correct way to form (write) letters.  Backward letters count as a mistake.

MATH-We are moving along with composing and decomposing numbers to 10.  Good strategies going on in here.  I love to watch all of this happen.  The growth and thinking is impressive!

By the way, ALL of my students went up in both READING and MATH on the NWEA!!  So very proud of each of them.  Thanks again for all you do to support them.

Let Them Be Little

“Let them be little

cause they’re only that way for a while.

Give them hope,

give them praise,

give them love,

every day.

Let them cry, let them giggle,

let them sleep in the middle.

Oh, just let them be little.”

Have a good weekend.

Tomorrow bring in 2 things that RHYME

Since we are working with RHYMING words this week, tomorrow, Thursday, the students are to bring in 2 things that RHYME.  Have fun!

Math

Here is a little info as to what Module 4 lessons are about…you will see these in the homework packet.  Remember that Math Homework is due on MONDAYS.  Have your child put it in their backpack Sunday evening so they know they have it ready for Monday.  Thanks for helping to make your child responsible and develop good school habits.

I am still trying to get my pictures loaded to my blog form the 100th day!  Very frustrating that they won’t travel from my phone to my computer.  All suggestions are welcome.  🙂

I saw this quote this morning…

“Before a child talks, they sing.

Before they write, they draw.

As soon as they stand, they dance.

Art is  fundamental to human expression.”

Week of February 25, 2019

We have had a great day, celebrating the 100th Day of Kindergarten!!

I took quite a few pictures but they have not come up yet on my computer.  I’ll post them on Monday when they pop up.

We also had fun with Science, building a shelter for our “bear” to protect him from harsh weather (our science unit.)  I enjoyed seeing their creations and watching their problem solving skills in a situation.  Some clever thinkers in here!

Here’s a look at next week…

READING- Penguins  After learning about Penguins we will compare them to Polar Bears and then contrast them to Polar Bears.  Critical thinking skills in action.

WRITING-Informational about Penguins

SPELLING-We will work with the am chunk.   jam (watch where that  “j” goes below the line).bam   ram   cram  slam      he     she  you= 8 words for the week

PHONICS-Rhyming Words…always fun!

SOCIAL STUDIES-Geography and how do we learn about the past?  What do we use to learn about the past?

PTA is sponsoring the Book Fair.  Information/flyer went home yesterday.  If you can offer your time to help out in the Book Fair, I know it would be appreciated.

Thanks for all you do on the home front.  It always shows!!

Have a good weekend.

Forgot math

I even managed to get in a great MATH lesson but ran out of room on our agenda calendar!

Here’s today’s agenda

Today’s agenda

Here’s a typical day’s agenda for us in here.  Just thought you’d be interested in a typical day for us.

I am so very happy to be back and on regular reading group schedule.  I enjoy my time with each student, listening to them read, choosing their favorite book to read to me and why they chose that book, finding out special thoughts, dreams, wishes, that they have…even concerns.  My kids are becoming such great readers and thinkers.  I’m so proud of them.

Strep throat-2 cases in here
