Informational Writing

Today students are bringing home a small brown book about Turkeys. It is an Informational Book. We have been reading and researching information about turkeys. Now the students had to write their own sentences about turkeys, complete with a capital letter at the beginning, spaces between words, and a period at the end. Please have your child read their book to you. Lots of work for first quarter Kindergarteners! I am pleased with their work and effort and they are proud of their accomplishment.

Even though there is no snow on some of the sidewalks, students still need to wear boots to school. They go outside for lunch recess and there is snow on the playground and, of course, they always want to play in it

MATH was fun today. I gave them a 2 inch piece of paper and had them find things that were longer than the paper and shorter than the paper. New vocabulary for this unit of MEASUREMENT. Yesterday we worked with taller than and shorter than. More new vocabulary for describing measurement and comparison.

Have a good evening.

WRITING Informational writing about Turkeys

I also hope to make a “Thankful Book.” We’ll see if we have the time

MATH We will begin Module 3 “Comparison of Length, Weight, Capacity, and Numbers to 20.” We will begin with length, width, and height.

SOCIAL STUDIES For the next several weeks we will be talking about Goods and Services, Needs and Wants, and Trades. to go along with our Community Helpers and our part in a community.

READING GROUPS Reading Groups are going well and we are working on good strategies for reading, like looking at the pictures to help us figure out words in the text, looking at the beginning and ending sounds, pushing through words, using context clues, predicting what could the word be, etc. Good readers!

Have a lovely weekend!

Tuesday conferences rescheduled

Tuesday, November 12 conferences have been rescheduled for next Monday, November 18.

Here are the Monday 11/18 night conferences.

Remember to pack shoes!

I had 4 students without shoes today. Remind them to put their shoes in their backpack.

Thanks

Boots!

A reminder that students need to WEAR THEIR BOOTS TO SCHOOL, not carry them in their backpack. Shoes in backpack… boots on feet. some forgot shoes today and my class had gym so they didn’t get to participate in gym class (and they LOVE gym class!!!).

Thanks for the help and reminders at home.

Food Drive

Howard School is teaming up with Hype Athletics to collect cans of food and boxes of dried goods to provide to those in need. Please consider donating food items to this worthy cause. As an incentive, the class who donates the most items will be given a Pizza Party by HYPE. Let’s see what we can do to help those less fortunate than we are.

Donation box outside my classroom door

Thanks!

Play doh and Dry Erace Markers

Some of you have asked what I could use in here…well, we could definitely use DRY ERASE MARKERS and some playdoh.

Thanks in advance.

Week of November 11, 2019

Another week of learning and reminding each other of how to be good friends.

LETTERS R r Y y

WORDS After last week’s letter I i , I am combining previous letters with the i for this week’s words. is it in Make some more word cards to practice these new words. Make sentences with the cards. Remember to make a card for the period at the end of each sentence!!!

PHONICS Our last week of really focusing on ending sounds of words.

WRITING Informational Writing about …..(what else??) TURKEYS!

MATH We will continue on with Geometry, identifying 2D (flat shapes) and 3 D (solid shapes) shapes. Look for some around the house. For example, a can of soup is a 3D shape. A refrigerator is a 3 D shape. A piece of paper is a 2D shape.

This Module will end on Wednesday and I will be giving an end of the Geometry Module Assessment on Thursday and Friday.

As usual, Math Homework Packet is due on Monday.

SOCIAL STUDIES We will continue with Community Helpers.

As always , I am really enjoying my conference time with my families. It’s never enough time though to share about my students! Their reading is coming along and most have already moved up a reading level. 🙂 thanks for your support at home. It is win-win when home and school work together. Reading with and to your child is the single most predictor of a child’s success. Turn of the video games and READ. Remember that your child will emulate what you do…you read, they will read. You play games with them and they will want to play too. I bought some new games for them and brought them out today. FUN FUN FUN! Matching rhymes, making silly rhymes and an INITIAL SOUNDS game. They had a great time playing games AND they didn’t realize that they were reinforcing the concepts, goals that I have been teaching. Sneaky…ha!

Monday-Friday BOOK BAGS due Check your child’s backpack for the day Bag is due.

WEDNESDAY-Library Book due

Keep dressing them in warm clothes. An announcement was made this morning, reminding them to wear boots, warm jacket, hat, scarf, and mittens/gloves. For the shoes, please send shoes that they can put on and tie. Lacing up 25 pairs of fancy shoes takes up way too much time in the morning. 🙂 Have them practice at home.

Have a wonderful weekend. As strange as this may sound, I’m not always that happy to see Fridays come because that means I won’t see my kids for a few days. Enjoy them at home.

Hello Snow!!

Here is our procedure for snow weather…

Please have your child WEAR their boots to school. SHOES GO IN BACKPACK. Have your child put their shoes in their backpack-that way they will know that they have shoes. Even if the sidewalk looks clear, they need to wear their boots to school. Some snow and water gets carried in on their boots and the warm building will melt the snow. Boots stay in the hall so as not to get tracked into the room and onto the carpet where they sit to begin their day. I don’t want them sitting on wet carpet. 25 kids can bring in a lot of snow and wetness!

So shoes IN BACKPACK. Wear boots to school.

If your child does not yet have boots, this weekend would be a good opportunity to grab some!

Thank you for your help.

Once a month all Howard students gather in the gym to celebrate the good choices that we have made during the month. Today we gathered to celebrate those students who made good choices during the month of October. We call that “being on green.” Each teacher gets to announce the students in her class who stayed on green all month. Just about all of my students managed to make good choices by being responsible, respectful, and safe. We talk about INTEGRITY and discuss opportunities to show respect. We try to practice what we preach!! We think of others.

After each teacher announces her “All Green Students,” where they stand when their name is called and are recognized by the entire student body, Teachers then announce their “Students of the Month”. these are students who went above and beyond with good choices, helping others, seeing something that needs to be done and does it without being asking.

there are a few other awards given…

Mr. Haliburda (GYM) gives the “Sportsmanship Award” for the class that showed the best cooperation and sportsmanship

Mrs. Thomas (ART) gives the “Mona Lisa” award to the class that is on task, following directions, and works safely in the ART room

Mrs. Bagnell (MUSIC) gives the award to the class who participates, cooperated, and follows directions the best.

Mrs. Lazar (PRINCIPAL) gives the “Etiquette Award” to the class who demonstrates courtesies, good manners, and cleans up after themselves in the cafeteria.

Well….

Take a look at which award WE were awarded today!

THE MUSIC AWARD!
We were given the guitar that is being held up in the back row. We get to keep it for the entire month. Hopefully we can earn it back next month!

and now for my Students of the Month…
Drum roll please……….
Youssef Hussain and Ali Fawaz!
congratulations on making good choices. Keep up the good work!

I am very proud of my class. Next month we are going to try for “All Green”, everyone making good choices without reminders.
