We mixed up our day and started off with Math. since we are talking about AREA, I gave them a playing card and asked them to estimate how many cubes would cover the card. Would the number be greater than or less than the amount to cover my teacher’s book.

I did have 3 in reading Group (Scarlett, Malak, Vera) who joined us after I took these pictures.

Then I gave them a few minutes to just “construct with the linking cubes.” Such creations!

The Student Council is hosting a fund raiser with a Lottery. Info is in this picture. Students can bring in money tomorrow. We will discuss “lottery” and what the odds are of being chosen. 🙂

We’ve been to the Library, done another Math lesson, and I’ve assessed 3 more students. Now back from lunch and I’m ready for Reading Groups. Then ART at 1:00 and we still have the afternoon to complete. Busy people learning many things (including how to be patient and get along with others the week before Christmas break!!) going on in here.

We ended our REINDEER unit by making a ‘REINDEER ‘ ornament. They LOVED painting the craft sticks. To add to the antlers, twist some brown pipe cleaners around the craft sticks for more antlers.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, is a LATE START.

Thursday is going to be PAJAMA DAY!!!! They will love wearing their pajamas to school. Send slippers too-it gets cold on our floor. Robes are optional.

Friday is going to be the All School Sing-a-long and our annual hair cutting for donating to Children With Hair Loss. Students need to have permission from their parents as well as their classroom teacher. 🙂 We don’t want anyone getting their hair cut without permission from home.

I am about 2/3 of the way through my assessments and hope to finish up by Friday. Most are reading all of the words with very little difficulty! Yeah! We will be spending some more time with writing the numbers correctly and writing up to 100. Once they get past the “tricky teens” and see the pattern, it’s easy.

This will be the last week of 2019 for my blog! I can’t believe it!!!!!

Well…here we go for our last week together in 2019.

I have started some of my mid-year assessments and I am pleased with what I am finding. Math- counting and writing numbers are really coming along. the kids say, ‘These words are so easy to read” (yippee!!) and their recall of information about turkeys or reindeer is great. Many are giving me infor about BOTH turkeys AND reindeer! Showoffs 🙂

READING COMPREHENSION-Assessing

WRITING- We’re going back to Opinion Writing and we’ll write about “The Gingerbread Man.” Read a version of the story this weekend. Discuss it.

MATH-Area “Are there enough to cover a certain area?”

A few fun activities will be included in the week.

Today they are bringing home “Santa Going Down the Chimney” project and they are quite pleased with how it all came together. Let them show you.

They are also bringing home an ABC December Book that we just finished today for your reading pleasure. Lots of great discussions about the new vocabulary. Enjoy their work.

Time-please slow down!! Hard to believe that 2019 is almost finished! WOW!!

I had to be out yesterday and I thought about my kids all day! 2 weeks from them at Christmas is going to be rough for me.

Next week I will be sending home a

Kindergarten Card Marking 2 Study Guide. I will be assessing them the following week (Dec. 16) and hope to catch them all before the break. Look for the STUDY GUIDE.

LETTERS- As of this week , we will finish all 26 letters and sounds. Sounds of each letter are very important! Making the sound at the beginning of a word gets you started in pushing through the word.

READING AND WRITING- We will continue on with our study of Reindeer. We sure are learning a lot about reindeer, also called caribou. Today we read and discussed their feet (2 toes and 1 dewclaw), their nose (covered in fur because their face is in the ice and snow so much), and where they live (on a tundra and in herds). Next week we will start writing our own sentences about Reindeer.

Ask your child to complete these sentences. I will be keeping their final writing piece for their cum file, which travels with them each year.

MATH-Weight and volume will be our focus.

Also next week will be VISION SCREENING for Kindergarteners.

SOCIAL STUDIES-We will finish up our unit on Goods and Services.

Goods are things we can buy, like books, clothes, food

Services are things that we pay someone to do, like a barber, painter, teacher 🙂 I might also add in TRADE. They seem to get that concept easily.

The excitement is building in here for Santa’s arrival! I am trying hard to keep germs at bay. Lots and lots of coughing this week. Hand washing, drinking water, proper rest, and avoiding others with coughs, colds, or germ areas are helpful things to do to stay healthy.

Here’s what’s coming home tonight. Please go through this with your child. I told them to write the answer under the problem and then use the color code to find out which color to use. Many need help in solving these simple addition problems. For example, adding 7 + 2, some have trouble counting to 7 using their fingers and adding 2 more. Once they get 7, they go back and recount the 7 when adding 2 more.

Homework due tomorrow. Thanks for taking the time to help your child. Make extra copies if you’d like and have them practice these facts.

A short week coming up!

For those of you who are traveling, please be safe.

PHONICS-On Monday I will be assessing beginning and ending sounds. You can focus on those parts of reading and speaking at home.

WRITING-We’ll be making a “Thankful turkey” to add to your home decorations!!
