It all began by reading The Foot Book. 

Next we decided to count how many feet were in our class.  (250)

Then came my question, “If there are 25 pairs of feet in here, how many toes are in here?”

We then discovered multiplying by 10 means adding 1 zero to a number.  If multiplying by 100 (which has 2 zeros), then add 2 zeros to a number. Of course we had to explore bigger numbers to prove our theory and Ta Dah!!!  We were doing 3rd grade math!
