Week of January 28, 2019

Good morning. I hope you are staying well and warm. I have 7 of my darlings out this morning. 🙁
This week begins our second semester! WOW, huh?
READING/WRITING Informational about POLAR BEARS. I hope we have enough days this week because the kids are quite interested in this topic. I am hoping to make a book for them to take home on Friday.
SPELLING-Second semester begins weekly Friday SPELLING TESTS.
We begin with very easy words. This week’s words include: cat sat hat I see can
If you will notice the words are from the very beginning of the year, some have the “at” chunk, and are words that they use in daily writing. I still have some that use a lower case “i” when writing the pronoun “I.” The pronoun “I” is ALWAYS capitalized. I also reminded that the word “hat” has an “h” at the beginning, not an “n.” Best to start now with flash cards (Dollar stores have 3 x 5 cards) to review.
MATH- We will begin Module 4, which deals with composing and decomposing numbers. We will use manipulatives, drawings, story problems, and number bonds to compose/decompose numbers.
SOCIAL STUDIES-How do we learn about the past? Books? Artifacts? ????
I will be putting a lot into each day. Hold on!
Stay warm,
Mrs. Smith

Social Studies

On Tuesday, I read a story to my kids about Martin Luther King, Jr. We then talked about what each of us might do to make this a better world. If these kids are the future, then we will be just fine! Their thoughts are fantastic-caring, thinking of others, sensitive to situations, feelings, very perceptive of those around, etc. Just precious. If I get time later, I will post their thoughts on how they would make the world a better place.
Yesterday I put them in groups and gave them the assignment of “How would you AS A GROUP make the world a better place?” This might sound easy but they had to agree on the choice, which is not always easy for 5/6 year olds. Each tends to think that their idea is the best. However, remembering what I just wrote in the above paragraph about how my kids work and feel, they got right to work, listening to all suggestions and then making their choice.
Here some pictures of them in groups and the final posters, now displayed outside my room.

What blossoming readers, writers, and mathematicians I have in here! I know they are having a blast by the enthusiasm and their voice level-wonderful to watch and be a part of their learning.
Here’s next week…
THEME-“Making the World a Better Place.”
READING- We’ll focus on Retelling with Beginning, Middle, and End. Have a go at it at home with stories that you read together.
WRITING-We’ll read about Martin Luther King. They will be part of a group to make a POSTER about how we can each make the world a better place.
PHONICS- long o as in “open” “over” “polar”
MATH-We’ll be comparing numerals. “1 is less than 7.” “4 < 8 ” They seem to understand “greater than” but are having some difficulty with “less than.”
Friday-half day Students dismissed at 11;45 am
Have a wonderful weekend.
