Book Bags

Your child may NOT have the “Book Bag” in his/her backpack.  I wanted to add a schedule in there so I pulled out their Book Bag.  They should be in their backpack tomorrow.

Book Bags

Today your child is bringing home a “Book Bag.”  Inside is a paper with directions as to how to login in to MyOn and Moby Max, 2 programs that district uses for reading support.  For now, I just want your chi;d to explore and listen to reading on these 2 programs.  You may want to make extra copies of login and password info to have when visiting Grandma, Mom/Dad at the office on the weekends, …

Beginning October 2,  I will have your child bring their “Book Bag” to school for me to send home a book.  Have your child bring their bag on their assigned day.

Week of September 18, 2017

First off I added another feature of our reading program…READ TO SOMEONE.  It’s reading with a partner and they enjoyed it.

And HIGH up in this tree flew our MAYA, the MONARCH                                                                   BUTTERFLY.  The kids quickly became very attached to her and we even had a few tears as she flew away and we came back to an empty classroom.  🙁

Good news, though…On Monday we will be getting a Black Swallowtail caterpillar!  She will take 9 months to live in her chrysalis and, hopefully, emerge in May/June.  I already started a Compare/Contrast on the 2 caterpillars.  My Scientists are so excited about this new learning.

Next week…A SHORT WEEK.  No school for Kdgrs on Friday.  I have a meeting.

Thursday, Open House

Thank you all for the great turn out tonight for your child!  It is always one of my favorite visits.

Here are a few pictures from today…

Math-Making Patterns with Pattern Blocks

SCIENCE-Our chrysalis hatched in the wee hours of the morning!  We have a Monarch Butterfly!  We named her “Maya.”  To say the kids were excited is an understatement—oh my goodness!!  Happy Birthday Maya 🙂

Maya was very quiet and tired from her work in hatching.  By the afternoon she had gained some strength and left her stick for some wing stretching and strengthening.  By 24 hours after hatching she will be very hungry so I gave her an orange slice and watermelon wedge.

Maya has to make a very long journey to Mexico City, Mexico, and then back up to Houston, Texas area to lay her eggs.  so, we will release her this afternoon so she can begin her flight.  She will live for 9 months, she’s the super-mom.  After she lays her eggs and they hatch, her daughters will fly to Oklahoma where eggs will be laid and her daughters will live for only 3 months.  Then the granddaughters will lay eggs, hatch, and fly north, lay eggs, hatch and great-granddaughters will fly on to Michigan, living only 3 months.  So you see, Maya is really the “Super-Mom!”

We will miss her but, hopefully, our “Clara, the Caterpillar” will spin her chrysalis by next week and…!!!

Library Books

Today your child went to the library for the first time and checked out a Library Book.  They are excited to take home the books…remember the book is THEIR CHOICE!  Readability level might be higher that you might choose, but they got to choose the book.

Please help them keep the book safe and clean-backpacks are a good spot to help with that.

Our day to return/exchange books is WEDNESDAY.  Students need to have their Library Book at school on Wednesdays in order to get a new book.

Blue’s Clues Box

Here’s what will be coming home with your child one of these days.  Each student will get a chance.  Enjoy!!

Number Awareness-Number of Days in Kindergarten shown by numeral, straws for Place Value, and counting.

Week of September 11, 2017

Our first full week of school has started and all was well.  We had 14 things listed on our Class Agenda and we accomplished them all!

We began our day with 2 new “visitors” in our room.  We have a caterpillar and a chrysalis! Both are now in our Science area for close viewing.  The students are VERY excited.  The caterpillar eats Milkweed leaves only and we are enjoying watching him eat the leaves.

The chrysalis should be forming a “J” in the next 3-4 days and will start shaking and shedding it’s skin.  Hopefully we will have a Monarch Butterfly when it hatches.  We even know how to tell if it is a boy or a girl!  We are enjoying being Scientists.

READING-High Frequency words for this week are “I”  “can.”   Look for these words to come home on their papers.

PHONEMIC AWARENESS-Sequence of sounds

-Word Segmentation

-recognizing Rhyme

-Syllable Blending

LETTER/SOUND RECOGNITION-“M m  A a”

COMPREHENSION-Listening Comprehension

WRITING-Correct Letter Formation of “M m” and “A a.”

MATH-Number Awareness 0-5 and Pattern Blocks

SCIENCE-Caterpillars, Butterflies, and BEING A SCIENTIST!

Take a look.  I couldn’t get them all, they were just so excited to look.

Here are some quick pictures of Math Exploring with Pattern Blocks.  Again, they wouldn’t all look up because they were so engaged in their creations.

This week…

Tuesday-WELCOME BACK PICNIC 4:00-6:00

Thursday-OPEN HOUSE

Have a good week.

Mrs. Smith

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Welcome to my class!  I’m glad you are here.  We had a great morning and we were very busy!  As of today, we have 22 students in here.

After hanging up our backpacks, we joined together on the carpet and got to know each other.  we talked about “living together” as a big family this year and things we will need to do.  We talked about taking turns and listening (not talking) when Mrs. Smith is talking, and doing what Mrs. Smith says to do right when she says it.  🙂

We did some Work Time at our seats.

We had Center Time.  We opened our Playhouse, Wooden Blocks, and Foam Blocks.  Tomorrow I will open the Writing Center too.

We went outside for Recess.

We met Coco, our cockatoo.

We read a story titled Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten.

I usually post every week, sometimes a few times in a week.  Look for what letter, sound, word chunk, counting, etc that we will be working on for the week.  Please check my blog to keep you informed and up to date.

This week I will be assessing the students in the afternoons.  If you didn’t get a chance to sign up for a slot, please see me for a time.

Tomorrow we will be having lunch in school.  Please pack a simple lunch for your child.  Label lunch boxes, as many look the same.

Birthdays-You are welcome to send in a birthday treat on your child’s birthday.  Cookies, cupcakes, fruit kabobs, muffins, jello shapes, gogurts, any simple finger foods are acceptable. Not drinks are needed-I have a drinking fountain in the room.

Supplies-For now, your child just needs a backpack.  NO crayons, scissors, etc are needed.  I’ll let you know when things are needed.

Snacks-I do like to offer the students a snack in the afternoons.  I offer everyone the same snack.  If you are running through Meijer, Sam’s Club, Kroger, would you grab a box of Goldfish, Cheeze-Its, Cinnamon Sticks, Oreo Snack Packs, etc, to donate to our class supply?  I would appreciate your donations.  For now I think I have enough tissue and wipes.  Thank you in advance.

Dismissal-This week Kindergarten dismisses at 12:15 for the rest of the week.  Regular dismissal will be at:

3:25-Mrs. Smith

3:30-Miss Mohamad

3:35-Mrs. Polgar

We stagger the dismissal times to avoid congestion of all the students and parents dismissing at the same time.  So, if your student is in my class, please be outside by 3:25. ( I will probably be early this week, so 3:20 would be a safe arrival time for you.)

Looking ahead…

9/12 Welcome Back Picnic  4:30-6:30

9/14 OPEN HOUSE–6:00-7:30

10/19  Picture Day 🙂

Again, we had a great morning.  We’re going to have a great year!!  Watch us fly.

Mrs. Smith

I thought you might like to see a quick peek into our room today.  See if you can find your little one.
