Week of May 22, 2017

Look at this year just zipping away!

Today was Field Day and we had lots of fun.  Thank you PTA and all parent volunteers!! A special thanks to Mrs. Mosallam for organizing this, securing equipment, organizing rotations, and coordinating this event.  The students always remember Field Day!

Next week…

READING-ART ALL AROUND  Week 2 of Unit 10

WRITING-Narrative Writing about “A Happy Moment.”  Have a chat about this topic over the weekend to help your child formulate some thoughts.

SPELLING-og chunk   dog  log  fog  hog  jog  frog  smog  clog      him   his  =10 words

NOTE: Several of the students got several words incorrect today!  Reason…incorrect letter of a capital p, instead of a lower case p.  They wrote siP , instead of sip.  This week they will have the same situation with the g.  When they practice the words, give them paper on which to write the words, not just orally spell the words to you.  That way you will see if the letters are correct.  dog   not doG.   Also watch jog.   jog, not JoG.

SOCIAL STUDIES-Memorial Day

Reminder that there is NO SCHOOL next Friday, May 26 in observance of Memorial Day.  If you are traveling, please be safe.  If you are staying at home, I’ll look for you at the parade.

Enjoy the weekend.

Greenfield Village trip

What a perfect day for a field trip…sunshine, warm breeze, no rain, and being outside!  Wonderful trip.  If we had driven about 10 more minutes on our way home, I would have had 24 little ones snoring…the fresh air had them refreshed and they were tired and quiet on the ride back to school.

Thank you to all parents for chaperoning.  I hope you enjoyed the day with your Kindergartener.  Mrs. Hider sent this picture, capturing most of my class.

One more thing…

Parents,

If you are NOT planning on having your child at Howard next fall, would you please let me know.

Thanks!

Field Trip

We are sooooo excited about tomorrow’s trip.

Parent chaperones….you may meet us at the Village tomorrow or car pool from school and meet us.  Since most of my parents are going and Miss Shepler needs a few more chaperones for her class, some of my parents will have more than 1 child in their group.

One of our Howard School focuses for these remaining weeks is always engaging in appropriate behavior.  The Kindergarten teachers have been stressing this expectation with our students.  Thanks for your support.

There is a playground area near the Carousel which is a good recess area.  However, this trip is an educational trip and we hope you will encourage learning about and investigating the different parts of the Village.  When I was an Elementary student, we were ALWAYS taking Field Trips to the Village.  Since I am small and short I could not see much nor was I interested in the buildings because we went as a large group and no one was there to talk to us.  I am so glad that my students will be in very small groups, which will allow for listening, questions, and learning about the past.

( Guess where my first job was when I was in high school…you guessed it…Greenfield Village and I loved it!)

We had a reader today…We were reading a story about a trumpet (Mo Willems) and the kids suggested that Mr. Blessing should read it because he likes music.  So, I sent down 2 messengers and back he came.  We even worked with “accents” (part of the story).  So glad he was able to accommodate our request!

The difference between school and life?

In school, you are taught a lesson

and then given a test.

In life, you are given a test

that teaches you a lesson.”

Week of May 15, 2017

Thank you Moms for attending our “Moments With Mom!”  These are the days and things that kids remember.  thank you for helping to make wonderful memories for them.

This week…

READING-We will begin our last reading unit`Unit 10  I KNOW A LOT!  Our theme is “Show What You Know.”

WRITING-Narrative   I will be giving them sentence stems (sentence starters) and they will write to that stem.  This week’s stem is “I can do many things, but I really wish I knew how to…”   As I do every week, Monday I will introduce and write a response to model for them.  Tuesday, we will write sentences together.  On Wednesday, they will do their own rough draft.  Thursday I revise and edit with them (Field Trip day) and Friday we publish and share our writing.

SPELLING-Since last Friday was a bit busy !!!, I did not give them the Spelling Test but did give them each 100% for that day’s grade.  🙂   This week we are working with the ip chunk.  Here you go…

rip  sip  nip  hip  lip  drip  ship  skip  slip  slip  = 10 words

MATH-Geometry and Number stories

SOCIAL STUDIES-Michigan Week

Also this week…

Wednesday-LATE START

Thursday– Field Trip to Greenfield Village  All Kindergarten students will ride the bus.  Parents may carpool or meet us there.  Bus will not leave until about 9:30.  Reminder that this trip is for Kindergarten students only.

Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Bring a sack lunch

Sunscreen

If you have a membership, please bring your membership card and ID with you.  Upon arrival at the Village, I will divide the group into those with memberships and those who need tickets.  Please do NOT take your child from the group until I have dismissed the students to parents.   I will decide on a meeting spot for gathering after our visit.

I will be giving the students a Scavenger Hunt to guide you with your visit.

All Kindergarten students will ride the bus back to school.  We should be returning to school about 2:30.

The students are very excited for the trip and so am I.  Since most of them do not ride a bus to school, the bus ride is often a highlight of the trip.   I think we may even have beautiful weather too.  🙂

Friday-  Field Day (sponsored by our fantastic PTA!)  This will be a morning of outside games and races.  This is an annual event and always a favorite among the students.  Thank you PTA for making this happen.  I understand that the organizers could use some extra hands that morning.  If you are available, please consider coming up to school and lending a hand.  We will be outside from 9:10-11:00.  The events are Flag Football, Basketball, Soccer. Spoon relay Race, Hula Hoops/Jump ropes, Sidewalk Chalk, Pizza Box Race, and a snack.  If you can lend a helping hand, please return the Volunteer Form coming home today with your child or send me an email.

Don’t miss out on something that could be great just because

it could also be difficult.”

Have a good week.

Look at my Writers!

This was this morning during our Writing Time.  For the first write, students were writing about a topic of their choice.  Then they conferenced with their partner, edited the writing and came back to the group for a second write.  That topic was something that they liked in the class…for example, Math (what part of math), reading (what is one of their favorite books  Why?), etc.  They were writing for 20 minutes, conferenced for 5-7 minutes, then on to the next writing topic.  Take a look…

April Students of the Month

Thank you so much!!!

Look at my darlings!  They surprised me with a framed class picture, a card signed by all, and a beautiful plant filled with girt cards!  WOW!  You are all so kind and generous.  I am very humbled.
