Many many thanks to each of the readers!  The kids always enjoy having their parent/grandparent read to them.  Thank you again.  (One of my daughters teaches first grade on the west side of the state and every year she always puts out an offer to her families to be a guest reader.  Each year she has 1-2 parents who offer to read.  This year I had 28 readers in here.  A couple were parents of former students of mine and their kids don’t even attend Howard anymore!  The kids are at Bryant or DHS.  Isn’t that a wonderful show of the value of reading!)

Here’s what coming up next week..

READING- We will finish our Unit about Plants.  Our focus will be “What is in your Garden?”

WRITING-Descriptive writing (writing with adjectives) about a flower.

Week of March 27, 2017

READING-We will continue learning about PLANTS.  Our theme this week will be  Seeds and Plants.  We will begin with a book titled  Seed Secrets.  It’s a story about how seeds travel so we will be talking and learning about similies!  Watch for some comparisons to be made at home.

WRITING-Informational   We will continue with First, Next, Then, Last.  I have broken down their writing for them and they are doing well with this form of organizing thoughts for their writing.  This week they were writing about what they do before school in the mornings.

First I get up.

Next I make my bed.

Then I eat my breakfast.

Last I brush my teeth.

The Informational Writing will be sequencing steps about planting seeds.

SPELLING-den  hen  pen  men  ten  here  was  plant

Most of the students are getting all of the words correct each week.  thanks for the help on the home front!  It shows and they get soooo excited when they recognize a Spelling Word in their reading or writing.

MATH-Introduce the quarter next Friday    We also will start “Function Machines.”  What’s my Rule—you’ll see when they bring home some examples.

Next week is full of events.  Take a look…

All Week is Spirit Week  Check out the events.  They came home on a green piece of paper.

Wednesday-Conferences (I have already sent home the conference notes for those that I scheduled for this round.)

Week of March 20, 2017

Thank you to our Guest Readers!  The students enjoy having their family member read to their classmates.

Today we had lots of Dearborn High School football team players come in for a visit.  Many of them have been in my class when they were a Kindergartener and they love to be back in the room.  “Every thing is so small in here!”

Anyway, 3 young men read to our class.

One of the players is Alex Moustafa, Maya’s big brother!  I’m sorry that I didn’t get the names of the other 2 readers but here are their plans after next year’s graduation…

The young man on the far left wants to be a Marine Biologist.  Alex wants to be an astronaut and the reader on the right wants to play for the NFL.  It is so gratifying to see these people and hear of their future plans.  Thank you to these players for giving up their class time to come and read to us and encourage READING!!

Th last picture is the Kindergarteners vs. DHS Football Players.  The tallest player is a former student of mine, Zane Berry

Here’s a look at next week…

READING-We will continue with Informational Reading as we begin our next unit –PLANTS.

Our focus will be trees.

The kids are very interested in learning new facts and I hope you are enjoying learning along with them.

WRITING-We will be writing about trees.  This past week we have been working with adjectives ( words that describe nouns) and the students are using them quite well in their writing.  We will write about treesand use adjectives to describe the trees.

SPELLING-SUPER FANTASTIC JOB WITH THE SPELLING THIS WEEK!!!!!!Keep up the daily practice.

SCIENCE-Seeds and Living and Non-Living things

SOCIAL STUDIES-I am finishing the Assessment on the students.  All of them are doing exceedingly well.

On a personal note, I am so proud of these people.  They are just blossoming into good students AND responsible, kind people.  I truly enjoy every day with them and miss them on the weekends.  They are my world.

Have a great weekend.

Important Running Club Announcement

Important Running Club Announcement

Due to overwhelming response and lack of volunteers, we have to revise our running club schedule.

Beginning tomorrow (Thursday), we will split the runners into groups.

Tuesdays: Kindergarten-2nd gr.

Thursdays: 3rd-5th gr.

Students may only come on their designated day, and siblings are not allowed to wait unsupervised. Since the weather has been cold and windy we have had to have the children practice indoors, and the hallways become overcrowded with over 130 students participating.  Please understand that we are making this change to keep practices more productive and focused and for the safety of all of the runners.

We are hoping that April’s weather forecast will be more favorable for running outside.  Coach Julie and the PTA will notify everyone when all classes will be able to participate on both days again.

Please note:  Tomorrow’s (Thursday) running club practice will be for 3rd-5th grade only.
