SPELLING-Spelling City

MATH-We’re working with ways to make 10.  Check out the Rainbow Worksheet that’s in their backpack.

Give them a number between 0-10  Ask them, “How many more to get to 10?”  For example, “3   How many more to get to 10?”  (7)

Lots of Number Stories (aka Story Problems)

Here are some examples…

Newton wants 3 kites.  They cost 10 cents each.  How much must he pay?  (30 cents) (count by 10’s)

How many 10-cent stickers can Aya buy for 40 cents?  (4 stickers)  (Count by 10’s)

At 5 cents each, how much will 9 tickets cost? (45 cents)  (count by 5’s)

Sophia’s hair is 15 inches long.  It is 1 inch longer than Medina’s hair.  How long is Medina’s hair?  (14 inches)

Hayden’s desk fits under the window in his room.  The window sill is 34 inches high.  How tall is Hayden’s desk?  (less than 34 inches)

Zora had 5 cents. She spent 4 cents at the bake sale.  Her mother gave her another 2 cents.  How much money does Zora have now? (3 cents)

Gus had a dime.  He bought some peanuts for a nickel.  How much money does he have left?   (5 cents, 5 pennies, or a nickel)

When he got home Gus’ dad gave him 5 cents.  How much money does Gus have now?  (10 cents)  Does he have more, less, or the same amount as he had to begin with?  (the same)

Tell a 10 story.

Tell a 0 story.

Tell a 7 story.

In her lunch box Emily has 3 carrot sticks and 2 celery sticks.  She has as many cookies as vegetable sticks.  How many cookies does she have?  (5 cookies)

Isabella had 5 cookies in her lunch and ate 3 of them.  Then she gave 2 cookies to Lola.  How many cookies does Isabella have left?  (0 cookies, or none)

Luca measured 1 cup of water and poured it into a jar.  The jar was then half full.  How much water does it take to fill the jar?  (2 cups)

Kassim walked 6 blocks to school and Jamal walked half as far as Kassim.  How many blocks did Jamal walk? (3 blocks)

The rug in Ameer’s room is 8 feet wide.  It is 2 feet longer than it is wide.  How long is the rug?  (10 feet)

Octavian weighs 42 pounds.  Chase weighs 1 pound less than Octavian.  How much does Chase weigh? (41 pounds)

SCIENCE-We’ll continue with the life cycles of frogs and butterflies.  I sure wish it would warm up enough to get some caterpillars!

SOCIAL STUDIES-Each person is special.

10 Rods

Look at all these 10 rods!  We counted up all of the 10 rods.  then figured out how many 1’s we had.

23  10 rods= 23

23   1’s=230

Wow…we counted past 100 and then past 200.  We are noticing patterns and I heard many comments like “math is so much fun!”

Thank you all for coming today. I hope you each enjoyed your special time with your Kindergartener.  They were so excited that you were coming.  I’m sorry I don’t have any pictures to post but I think you moms took many on your phone.

READING-Unit 10-week 2  Art All Around

SPELLING WORDS-On Spell City

WRITING-I’ll be doing assessments of their writing.

MATH-From a given number, how many more make 10?

Writing numbers (on their own) from 0-20.

Fluently add and subtract 0-10

Compose and Decompose numbers from 11-19 into 10’s and 1’s.  For example, 14= 1 -10  and 4 -1’s   19= 1 -10  and 9 -1’s

Give your child a number and have them draw it out for you.

I’ll send a picture of how they should be drawing these numbers.

SCIENCE-We’re going to start the life cycle of a butterfly!

SOCIAL STUDIES-Our Flag  We will identify our flag as an important symbol of our country, The United States of America. we’ll also be discussing important values and principles of our country (Constitutional democracy)

We read “Turtle Splash,” which is a counting book about 10 turtles on a log.  Different animals appear and, one by one, they scare a turtle into the pond. So,for math, we made a counting book.  For Science and an opportunity to work with others in a group, we made Pond Murals.  They did a wonderful job and really enjoyed working in a group.  Take a look…mural1 Zora, Sandy, Yara, Sophia, and Celina
