Butterflies :)

Look what flew into my classroom???  Beautiful butterflies!

Lots of MATH in designing these masks.  The designs were to be symetrical.  We even talked about the perimeter of the butterfly’s wings.  Good vocabulary for Kindergarten.  See if you can spot your Butterfly!masks

Empty Paper towel rolls/Next Year

If you have any empty paper towel rolls, we could use them for a math project.

Also, in planning for next year, if you are NOT planning on having your child attend Howard School, please let me know.  Otherwise, I will schedule them for a spot in First Grade at Howard.  Thanks

I read a Chinese folk tale to my students titled “Ma Lien and the Magic Brush.”  It’s a story about a poor peasant farmer named Ma Lien who’s greatest dream was to be an artist.  Being so poor, he did not have even enough money to buy a paint brush.  He would use a stone to scratch on a flat rock or his fingers to draw in the wet sand of the riverbank.  One night, as he lay in his bed looking at all the pictures he had drawn on his clay walls, there was a flash of light and an old wizard appeared.  The wizard told Ma Lien that he had worked very hard and earned a brush.  His only words were to use it wisely because it had great power. As the story unfolded, others saw Ma Lien’s drawings come to life and they wanted to use his brush.  However, their creations didn’t come to life. My students realized that Ma Lein painted only things that would help others, while the other people painted things only to help themselves.

I asked my students what they would paint if they were given a magical paint brush.  Look at their responses…FullSizeRender (91)

Short week this week

This week is a short week (NO SCHOOL FRIDAY 5/22 AND MONDAY 5/25) so that we may honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our country and give our respect and thanks to those who are now serving our country.  Maybe I’ll see you at the Memorial Day Parade on Monday!

Given the short week, we will have this week’s Final Spelling Test tomorrow (Thursday).  Keep up the help on the home front.

Rhyming words

Today we wrote sentences that contained two rhyming words.  Together we created several sentences. We wrote them on the Promethean Board.  We circled the rhyming words. Next I had them choose 2 rhyming words (other than cat/hat    cat/mat     dog/log) and create a sentence with the 2 rhyming words.  The sentence had to make sense too.  Identifying and generating rhyming words is a component of  Foundational Skills for Reading.  Practice generating rhyming words (other than cat/hat, etc).  Then have your child create a sentence using those 2 rhyming words.  Experiment with different words.  Here’s Sandy Dabbous’ sentence…”The boy can keep the sheep.”
