Week of March 30, 2015
Author: Sandra SmithMar 29
Brrr..it’s good kite flying weather with the winds, but it’s also quite cold. I read that The temperature prediction for Thursday is 70 degrees! Wouldn’t that be lovely? 🙂
For those of you who went to Howard’s Roller Skating Event, I hope you enjoyed the evening. If you didn’t attend and had other plans, I hope you enjoyed your family time too.
Here’s what we’ll be doing this week…
READING-We’ll finish Unit 8 What’s In My Garden? I’ll read “Sunflower House.”
WRITING-Most of the students are writing 2-3 sentences on a single topic. Several students are writing more than 3 sentences on a topic. What great writers! They are focused on sounds and the corresponding letters to go with the sounds. Many are going beyond the individual sound to letter and are writing known words or are connecting to rhyming or spelling words. Awesome!!
They’ll write about what they might grow if they had a little garden. They’ll also write about if they had a little sunflower house, what would they do in it? Their writing response should be more detailed than just “I would play in it.” Who would be in the house with them? What would they play? Would they eat anything? Where would their house be? What would they have in the house? a bed? a lamp? a teddy bear?
On Thursday I will read a folk tale titled “The Rabbit and the Elephant.” Hmmm…I wonder what that tale will teach us?
SPELLING-Review week and a new chunk ub.
said little was here sub tub cub rub
MATH-Telling Time We’ve already talked about the hour hand, the minute hand. where the hands need to be for o’clocks, and that there are 5 minutes between any two consecutive numbers on the clock. Last week, using my big clock, I walked through 24 hours with them. This is 7:00-you are waking up. 8:00-eating breakfast 9:00-in school 11:00-finishing our Writing/Reading Groups 12:00-Recess 3:00-finishing our afternoon 4:00-home, having a snack and reviewing Spelling Words 5:00-setting the table and helping to prepare dinner 6:00-clearing the table and helping to clean up 7:00-studying Spelling Words and playing (7:30-get ready for bed) 8:00-IN BED 9:00 PM-7:00 AM -sleeping and then the cycle begins again. They were laughing and enjoying a walk through their day.
We also will review > < =
On Tuesday we will enjoy Ice Cream Sundaes…this month’s reward for good behavior and making good choices. Well earned, Kindergarteners. Keep up making those good choices.
SCIENCE-We will observe and record our plant growth in our Science Journals.
FRIDAY-No School
Have a glorious Easter and Spring Break!

Reading Assembly

Here’s a picture of us in the gym.
“Going On a Bear Hunt”
Making it “rain” in the gym!
We sang a song 10 times. Each time we sang the song, we left off the last word. It was funny and fun to sing that way.
Our last feature was the reading of our All-School Story. Each class wrote 2-3 sentences of a story before passing on the story to another class. We were all very interested and curious to hear the final story.
What a fun assembly!
Today…
WRITING and SPELLING-Instead of a Trial Spelling Test, we made a “rug” of “ug” words. This gave them a chance to practice some of their spelling words. Please remember to practice the words.
MATH-I hide 10 sticks behind my back. Next I pull out a few sticks. They need to discover how many sticks are behind my back. There are several strategies that they can use. Try it at home.
SCIENCE-We’re watching for any progress with our seeds that we planted and making entries in our Science Journals. They wear their lab coats and act like real Scientists. They observe, draw, and record their observations and findings.
READING-Keep up the reading at home. We’re still working towards an all-school goal of reading for 200,000 minutes. We just have a few more days to reach our goal. If we reach our goal, we will have a S’mores Party to celebrate our accomplishment.
SOCIAL STUDIES-I assessed each of them on Unit 2 and all did very well! I am pleased with their learning.
Tomorrow evening (Thursday) I have conferences with some parents. I have contacted those parents that I will be seeing this round.
Friday is Howard’s Skate Night at Skateland West.
4:30-6:30 37550 Cherry Hill Westland
Free for all Howard Students (includes roller skates/inline rental) All Howard students must present a ticket to enter at no cost. Tickets will be passed out on Friday during school)
$6.50 for Non-Howard Students (paid at the door)
Enjoy the rest of the week.

Wednesday

We’re sooo busy in here! The students have been working with Expanded Notaton in Math! Here’s what they do…
They use dice, rods (10’s) and 1’s.
First, they roll 2 dice. One die is for the tens. One die for the 1’s.
They write down the 2 numbers.
Next, they make the number with rods and ones.
Last, they expand the number.
For example, they might roll 3 5. The 3would be the 10’s and the 5 would be the ones.
Write down the 2 numbers.
Next, draw the number using rods and ones.
Last, expand the number. 30 + 5= 35.
And all in Kindergarten!
Thanks for the tissue rolls. We turned them into “Minions” and are hanging on our board. I’ll put up a heading saying, “A Minion Reasons to read at Camp Read-A-Lot!”
We’re getting a bit low on snacks. Thanks.
They are doing so well in here with their reading, writing, and math. Predictions and Problem Solving Skills are showing progress too. Thanks for your help and support.

I see some grass and feel some warmth from the sun…come on Spring!!
READING-We begin Unit 8 PLANTS
This week’s theme is How Trees Grow. We’ll be working with Sequencing with recalling stories and events. We’ll also focus on sequencing with this week’s writing. First, Next, Then, Last
LETTERS-K k ck
WORDS-Little little said
We will work with the ot chunk and I’ve added a word to go with our reading unit-plants.
So, this week’s Spelling Words are: little said hot not pot cot plants
WRITING-We will be writing Steps in a Process.
For example, Steps to make a Sandwich
First, you get some bread.
Next you spread on peanut butter.
Then you spread on jelly.
Last, you eat it.
Try some steps at home…Steps to get Ready For Bed, For School, To Go To Grandma’s House, To Eat Cereal
You don’t have to write down everything. Just talking through the steps is good practice for sequencing the thoughts/steps.
MATH-We’ll be doing some worksheets with Missing Numbers to 20. We’ll also play a Dice Addition Game with partners.
SCIENCE-Of course, we’ll plant some seeds.
SOCIAL STUDIES-We’ll talk about jobs that are related to Plants.
Tuesday is St. Patrick’s Day so we’ll be celebrating the “Holiday” in here. Wear something GREEN. 🙂
Wednesday is Library Book Day and Trial Spelling Test(so they’ll know what words need a little extra practice and study. ) Check out Spell City link on my blog. It’s a good chance to practice this week’s words.
Friday is Final Publishing of this week’s Writing and Final Spelling Test.
Lots of fun and I’m sure we’ll finally get some recess time!
Have a good week.
