Week of October 20, 2014

Fall is in full swing and I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather!

Here’s what planned for this week…

READING-We will begin Unit 2  FRIENDS.  This week’s theme is Learning About Friends.

Our new letter is S  s and our word of the week is like.

WRITING-Our focus will be on writing sentences.  This will include:

beginning with a capital letter

spaces between words

punctuation at the end

You can work with this at home.  All sentences need to make sense.  Have your child give you sentences using one of our words.  like   “We like riding bikes.”

All previous words should be known words now.  They should know how to read, spell, and write the words.  (  I  Can   can   We  we  The  the  am)  Now add like to their list of known words.

MATH-Teen Numbers   These can be tricky!  Again, you can work with this at home.

Looking ahead…

HALLOWEEN-October 31, 2014  We will have an All-School Parade  outside on the track in the afternoon.  Time TBA  Students will bring their costume in a bag on Friday, Oct 31.  Do NOT come to school in costume on that Friday.  They will change into their costume after lunch.  If you are able to pick up your child at lunch (11:25) to go home and dress, that would be great!  You should have them back by 1:00 pm.  That would give you a little extras time too.  No scary costumes or full face masks.  Bring your camera to the parade…they are really cute!!

Keep up your nightly reading logs and calendars.  The students are building up their reading stamina and read for 15 minutes one day last week!!  Keep it up readers!

Enjoy the week.

Mr. Denison

Mr. Whiston, our Superintendent, has announced the appointment of Mr. Denison to Bryant Middle School Principal.  We have enjoyed Mr. Denison for many years at Howard.  I have had the pleasure of having all three of his own kids in my Kindergarten classes and I have taught with him as a staff member.  He is a person of great integrity and leadership.  It has been an honor to work with him.  We wish him the very best in his new position.

Another short and busy week!

If I forget to post- Every Wednesday is Library Day.  Please have your child put their Library Book in their backpack on Tuesday nights.   Please have your child do this him/herself.  By allowing the child to do this, you encourage responsibility and independence.

We are winding up a week of A  a  and  The  the.  Adding last week’s letter M  m, we now have am to add to our Word Wall.  Please encourage your child to read, spell, write, and find these words.

Both yesterday and today they wrote a book using I am the ________.  Please have them read their book to you.  When reading, watch for left to right progression and top to bottom.

Math-We are working with 6.  Reading, writing, counting, and creating items. Check it out with them.  We also recognize many shapes in our everyday world.  Thanks for getting the “Plate of Shapes” returned so timely!  They are hanging in the hall.

Science-We have used our 5 senses to explore!  I hope to get outside tomorrow for some leaf exploration and observation.

Tomorrow my class will be taking the MAP test on the computers.  The test will be used to show us what they know and to chart their academic progress.  Lots of sleep and a good breakfast and lunch!

Tomorrow we have been asked to wear blue in response to taking a stand against bullying.  On Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at 6:00,  there will be a city kickoff event at the Ford Performing Arts Center.  All are invited to attend this free event.

Keep up the reading at home.  Remember to fill in the October Owl Calendar and the Reading Log.  We are working on our reading stamina.  We have discussed how by reading we get to be better readers!  we chart our reading stamina every day.  Today we had 2 opportunities to increase our stamina.

Thanks for your support at home.
