A Plate of Homework-due Thursday

This week we are talking about different shapes and their attributes.  Today your student is bringing home a paper plate with shape words on it.  They are to find a picture or 2 in newspapers or magazines of the shapes, cut out the picture (Let your student do the cutting-fine motor development), and glue/tape them on the plate.

Their “plate of shapes” homework is due this Thursday.

Thanks for your support!

P.S.  I’ll send home the October Reading Book List tomorrow (to record the books you read at night).

Tuesday

Coming home today is an October Book List form.  It is for you to complete with book titles as you read books with your child each night.  Please remember to Print the book titles.   Enjoy reading with your child!

Tues., Sept. 30

A reminder that tomorrow is LATE START.  School begins at 9:35 am

Tomorrow is also LIBRARY DAY.

Friday, Sept., 26, 2014

We finished up the week with…

READING-I  Can  can  all students should know how to spell and write.

We made a book today titled I Can.   It is in their Book Box, to be read during Read To Self time.

WRITING-Journals  They were to write their own sentence using “I  can ______.”  Thinking of their own idea was the first step!

MATH-We played a game with the number 8.  Ask them about it.  We played the same game yesterday using the number 7.  Both days we had the same winner-Aya Chami!!  We also finished Unit 1 in the Math Book.  We are busy in Kindergarten 🙂

I explained the Pizza Hut Book-It Reading that they will be doing at home, beginning Oct. 1.  I decided to wait until next week to send home the October Calendar Reading Log.  (It has owls on it.)

Last year I started a Science focus and, to help with turning my students into Scientists, I had them each bring in one of Dad’s (or uncle, Grandpa’s) white t-shirts that will become their “Lab Coats.” Afterall, scientists do wear lab coats!  I have safety glasses for them.  We won’t be using them for a few weeks but I want to be prepared.  Thank you.

Next week…

READING-Our reading theme for the next 3 weeks will be “My Family and Me.”  I will be starting Reading Groups.

WRITING-Our letter for the week is M  m.

Our word for the week is We    we.

Look for papers to come home using these letters/words.  Have your child read his work to you.

MATH-We will begin Unit 2.  We’ll talk review basic shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle) and review patterns.

Looking ahead…

Wednesday is a LATE START.  For those buying their lunch, I will take their order on Tuesday.  Check the menu for daily choice.

Friday, Oct. 3 & Monday, Oct. 6_NO SCHOOL

Get out and enjoy this gorgeous fall weather!

Book-It

The only way to get better at reading is to read!   So, with the help of Pizza Hut and Book-It, my class will be “reading our hearts out” for the next 6 months.  I will send home an October Reading Log. After reading for 20 minutes each night, color in the date on the calendar.  At the end of each month, return the calendar to me for a coupon for a free Personal Pan Pizza at Pizza Hut.

Watch for the calendar!

Wednesday

I just thought I’d drop a note about today.

READING-We introduced READ TO SOMEONE.  Each student has a partner with whom they will read.  This goes along with our Literacy Program.  We already do READ TO SELF daily.

We are working on increasing reading Stamina.  Students are up to reading to reading for 4 minutes to ourselves!  Great work for beginning Kindergarten.

Next week I will start Reading Groups.

MATH-We are using those egg cartons for counting beans, pennies, mini blocks, and buttons.  Good practice for One to One matching.

WRITING-We made a list of our 5 Senses.  Naturally I wanted to keep them to hang up…they want to take them home.  That always happens!

This afternoon they have gym and Library book return.

Thanks for the snacks.  We have a nice supply for now.  I’ll let you know when the supply starts dwindling.

Another busy day in Kindergarten!

Library Day today

I forgot to mention that today (Wed.) is Library Day.  Please have your student bring their Library Book to school today.

Thanks

Extra Egg Carton?

Have an empty egg carton?  I could use a few for math.

Week of Sept. 22

Good Morning!  I hope you and your family enjoyed some family time together in this beautiful, fall weather.  Cool and crisp!

Thanks to those who have returned the Howard Behavior Plan.  If you have not returned the Howard Behavior Plan, please sign and return it.  I still have several missing.

This week…

READING- We are in week 3 of our Start-up Unit.  This week we will review our words, I  Can  can, from weeks 1 & 2.  I have also added using a period at the end of sentences.  We also will be discussing sounds.

This week we will discuss Position Words (above, between, beside, top, behind, …)  Last week we talked about characters in stories.  This week we will focus on settings.  Can you visualize the setting as we read a story?  You can discuss these when you are reading bedtime stories!

WRITING-We will focus on each student writing their own sentence about I can…  (a complete, independent thought)

MATH-We will begin a number book.  Correct number formation will be emphasized.  I will begin assessing 1 to 1 correspondence with counting.  You can practice with them at home-have them count silverware, napkins, pennies, shoes, around the house.  They should touch each item as they say the number.  I will also be checking to see if they know that the last number that they say in counting items will represent the actual number of items.  For example, the student counts 18 shoes.  I ask them, “How many shoes are there?”  They should answer “18.”

Looking ahead…Book Fair Purchases are today.

Enjoy your week.
