Week of April 7, 2014

Another busy week in Kindergarten!

READING-We will begin Unit 9 AMAZING CREATURES.  This week’s theme is Interesting Insects.  Today I read them an informational book about Beetles.  Before we heard the story, we thought of some questions about Beetles.  We were surprised at how many of our questions were answered in the text.  Thinking of some questions before reading the text really helped us focus our reading! What a good reading strategy we learned.

This week’s letters…“G  g  W  w.”

This week’s words are “He he  She  she.”

We will be making WORD WEBS to help with writing.  On Thursday I will read a fable about an ant and a grasshopper.

WRITING-We will be writing Questions and Answers.  For example,

“How many legs does a beetle have?”

“A beetle has 6 legs.”

As always, Wednesday we will Prewrite, Thursday-Revise and Edit, and Friday we will Publish our writing.

On Friday we will compare 3 texts that we will have read this week.  We did this last week and they did a great jobs with comparing 3 texts!!

MATH-We will continue with story problems, practicing with tens and ones blocks,  and time. (hour and half hour)  we also will play an addition game with dice.  Tomorrow we will make some 3-D shapes with toothpicks and marshmallows.  Feel free to make some shapes at home and sent them in for all to see.

SCIENCE-Potato watching and recording data continues  🙂

This week…Wednesday-LATE START

Thursday is Literacy Night.  This is a family event-come join in the fun!  There will be activities from which to choose, each activity lasting 15 minutes.  You will receive a card as you arrive at school.  Then choose your activity and your card will be punched for that activity.  Mrs. Fitzpatrick and I will be in my room making Pete the Cat Bookmarks.  Other activities include paper bag puppets, bingo, readers theater, and others!  I hope to see you here on Thursday night!

Our student Council is having a Returnable bottle/can Collection Drive this week.  The money that we collect from returning bottles will be used to buy flowers to beautify our Howard School grounds.  We will keep a class tally.  I wonder how many bottles we will collect??  Thanks for your participation.

My Kindergarteners are really taking off with their reading and writing!  It is such a joy to watch and listen to these fluent, confident readers!  Keep up you support at home.  I appreciate it.

Have a good week.

I have a few minutes so I though I’d post you a note.

Students are rolling along quite well with their reading and writing.  They are able to write several sentences on a single topic and remember to begin with capital letters, put spaces between words, and end with punctuation.  WOW!  They are quite used to the WRITING PROCESS-Rough draft, Revise, Edit, and Publish.  Amazing writers and readers.  Thanks for your support at home.

Thanks for helping your child remember his/her Library Book today.  We only had 2 people who couldn’t check out a new book because they didn’t have their Library Book.  Great Job!

SCIENCE-Potatoes are soaking in water and we sure do wish they would sprouts some roots.  We keep watching, waiting, and hoping for some activity.

Please continue working with math number awareness…creating number stories (using numbers greater than 15), writing the number sentences, greater than, less than, 3-D shapes, money (penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar) and time (hour and half hour).  Haven’t they come a long way from the one-to-one counting of objects to 5 or 10??

Wednesday, April 9, is a LATE START.

Thursday, April 10, is LITERACY NIGHT.  Come and enjoy some fun activities connected to Reading!

Coming up…

Thursday, April 17, is PTA Skating Party 4:30-6:30  Details to come home later.
