Friday-Hat Day!
Author: Sandra SmithFeb 27
Tomorrow, Friday, we are having a fundraiser for our PBIS store. Your child may wear a hat and bring $1.00 to donate for purchasing new items for our PBIS School Store. We love to shop at our PBIS store by earning rewards for making good choices each day. We also like to wear hats! Such a deal!
Monday we will celebrate the 100th day of school. Remember we are dressing up as someone who is 100 years old!
Our school reward for February will be the Howard School Talent School next Tuesday. That should be fun too.
100th Day Event

Next Monday, March 3, we will be celebrating the 100th day of school. My class has discussed dressing up like a 100 year old person! (Thanks Mrs. Balestrieri for the suggestion.) The kids seemed very excited about the idea so have fun at home finding some appropriate clothing and/or props.
MARCH IS READING MONTH-Howard School’s theme is “Wild About Reading.” We will be celebrating the love and adventure of reading. We will have some special activities during the month. I would also like to invite parents or grandparents to read to our class. I will have a sign-up sheet by the end of this week. Please stop in and sign up. Readings should be about 10-15 minutes long.
Here come those long-awaited Valentine’s Day pictures!

Welcome back! Whether you traveled or stayed close to home, I hope you enjoyed your week. We still have snow and cold outside so make sure your child dresses appropriately. Boots are still needed for outside and shoes are needed for inside the classroom. Have your child put their own shoes in their backpack at night as they are setting up) for school in the morning. This helps them with responsibility.
READING-Our Theme for the next 3 weeks is WEATHER AND SEASONS. This week’s unit is Kinds of Weather. (There is a difference between “weather” and “temperature.”–Beware!)
Our words this week are: This this Do do
Our letter is “E e.” We will be working with the short e sound, as in “egg elephant” and in the middle of words, like “net ten.”
SPELLING-We will be working with the “am” chunk.
__am __am __am ram Sam ham
I will be checking for correct spelling on all previous weekly words. (Last week’s words were for you are)
WRITING-For the next 3 weeks we will return to Narrative Writing. We also will learn about Onomatopoeias. Stay tuned!
MATH-Since the 100th day of school is approaching, we will be working with the number 100. We also will review pennies and nickels. Let’s compare…who has more? Less? (Next week, the dime appears!)
SCIENCE-Weight and water will be our focus.
We had a great day on Friday, Feb. 14, celebrating St. Valentine’s Day. The kids always enjoy delivering and opening all of their Valentines. Such fun! I will post some pictures later today.
Have a good week

Happy Birthday Abraham Lincoln! Today we will talk about our 16th President. Yesterday we made Mr. Lincoln with our third grade Buddies. I hope you enjoy him.
READING-We wind up our unit about Neighborhoods. We will review “H h D d R r” letters and sounds and the words “Are are For for You you.” These words have been added to their writing/reading word wall and the students are expected to know them. By now, they have quite a healthy list of words that they are expected to know and they are doing very well with reading and writing those words. We also have been working with “at” and “an” chunks. They should be able to read words and create rhyming words with those chunks in them. Look for these words and chunks in your daily reading with them.
MATH-$$$ Since we already know the penny and nickel, I am adding on dime. Practice making trades at home with money. Start slowly…”How many pennies will you give me for this nickel?” Dimes for pennies? Pennies for 1 dime and 1 nickel?
WRITING-Grammar!!! I am focusing on speaking and writing with correct grammar! “My sister and I…” (not “Me and my sister…”) I have taught them how to figure out if they need to use I or me. It takes practice. They need to hear correctly spoken grammar in order for them to speak and write correctly themselves.
VALENTINE’S DAY is Friday. The students have been telling me all about writing out names on the Valentines. They are so excited. Today we are making a Valentine bag.
***I told the kids today that I was going to post on my blog to you that they are becoming “awesome writers!” You should have seen today’s Free Writing. Amazing sentences and they just kept on writing until I stopped them. Super-duper stamina!
Have a good rest of the week. Think Spring and have a warm (?) Mid-Winter Break.

What a winter! I’ve lived here all of my life and never had snow days nor weather like this! Here’s to a full week of school–finally!
Last week we had some great Science and Math time. I also sent home the Monster Squeeze Game for them to play with you. (It’s the last picture.) Check it out the learning fun…
I will add this week’s learning plans later. I just wanted to get the pictures to you.
