Monday 1/27/14

In case you have not heard by now, SCHOOL IS CLOSED FOR TOMORROW, Tuesday 1/28/14.   Stay tuned for any future closings.

For our Spirit Week-

Wednesday is class color day.  Kindergarten color is……RAINBOW!!”  Fits perfectly for Kindergarteners.   🙂

The students are doing so well with their reading and writing.  They have the tools for a super sentence

-Begins with a capital letter

-Spaces between words

-Punctuation at the end (  .  ?   !  )

Today we were discussing dialogue.  After reading a story, I had them talk with their elbow buddy about some dialogue that the main character, Russ, might have with others.  Then they wrote their sentences in their Journals.  They did a great job!  Keep up the reading, discussions, and writing at home.  I can always tell who is taking these literacy steps to help support these young readers and writers! Daily home involvement is so important.

Stay warm and safe.

Week of January 27, 2014

I hope you enjoyed last Friday and managed to stay warm!  Teachers were participating in Professional Development.  Howard teachers worked with Literacy and Math.  We were busy and productive!

This week is …SPIRIT WEEK!!

To celebrate Howard School Spirit, our Student Council has planned some fun activities.  Here we go…

Monday-MOVIE/POPCORN DAY  Student Council will provide the popcorn for us to enjoy while we watch a movie.  Thanks Student Council!

Tuesday-HIPPIE DAY  You can come to school dressed like a hippie!

Wednesday-CLASS COLOR DAY-We will choose a color and let you know our choice.  Wear a shirt, jersey, sweatshirt in that color.

Thursday-SPORTS DAY-Wear a hat, jersey, sweatshirt of a favorite sports team

Friday-PAJAMA/CRAZY HAIR DAY and BIRTHDAY PARTY -Wear your pjs,  fix your hair in a crazy way, and we’ll celebrate everyone’s birthday.

A fun, exciting, and Howard  School Spirit-filled week!

Here are some other things we’ll be doing this week.  🙂

READING-Keep on reading every night at home.  I can always tell those who read (or are read to) every night.  Make reading a daily priority.  Discuss the stories with your child.  Ask questions.  This week we will be working with identifying main ideas and details in stories.  Fluency in their reading is improving.  So is their Accuracy with words.  On Friday we will compare 3 texts that I will read to them this week.  I will ask them about the main idea of each book and some  details.  You can do the same with books that you read with them.  Have them read with expression too!

WRITING-We will be writing dialogue.  WOW!

SPELLING-Dearborn Schools is implementing a new Spelling Curriculum.  Kindergarten starts with second semester (1/27/14).  This week we will focus on the “at” chunk.  Our word for our Treasures Reading Curriculum is “ Are  are.”  Letter is “H  h.”  Since my class has been writing since the first day of school,  I expect them to do very well with the Spelling Curriculum. I will also be adding some words from a Dolch Sight Word List.   Keep up with the weekly reading unit words too, though.

MATH-We will continue with Subtraction Story Problems, since, with days missed with snow days,  we haven’t really worked enough with them.  We also will play an Attributes game.

SCIENCE-We will work with cars rolling down on a ramp and then measuring distances.  How will we measure?  Stay tuned!

Have a great week and STAY WARM!!

Reminder

Reminder that tomorrow is an early dismissal at 11:45 am.

Homework tonight-due tomorrow

Have your child complete and return their “f” homework tomorrow.  It is very easy…they can do it all by themselves.

Also, Library Books are due every Wednesday.  If they did not return their book today, the have your child put their book in their backpack right now so they can return it tomorrow!  Responsibility building when the child does things.

Thanks.

Week of January 21, 2014

We have a short week but we will be busy in here!  Please help your child build responsibility by having them set up their own backpack every night before bed.  Have your child put in their library book, shoes, etc.  By having them put things in their backpack they know what’s in the backpack as well as being responsible.  Then in the morning they just add their lunch.

Looking ahead…

Next week will be our Howard School Spirit Week.  Here is the plan…

MONDAY, 1/27  POPCORN/MOVIE DAY  (I will provide these items.)

TUESDAY, 1/28 HIPPIE DAY  Come to school dressed like a hippie!

WEDNESDAY, 1/29 CLASS COLOR DAY  I’ll let you know of our decision.

THURSDAY, 1/30 SPORTS DAY Wear a hat, sweatshirt, jersey of your                                                                                favorite team

FRIDAY, 1/31 PAJAMA/CRAZY HAIR DAY and BIRTHDAY BASH PARTY!  We will celebrate everyone’s birthday with a cake!

Here is this week…

SOCIAL STUDIES-I have finished Social Studies assessments for our unit on Goods/Services, how we learn about things in the past, and trading.  The results were terrific!  🙂

READING-I will continue with the Mid-Year Reading Assessments.  We will also be finishing our unit about Animals.

WRITING-We will continue with Opinion Writing, using the Writing Process of:

1. Making a plan

2 Prewrite

3. Edit/Revising

4. Publish

The students are doing very well with this process.  They are using their reading words and doing a great job of “stretching out” (sounding out) words.

SCIENCE-We will be touching on Weather.

Such wonderful growth in the academics and such wonderful kindness in their actions and thoughts toward others.  These are tomorrow’s future leaders—we are going to be well led!

Have a great week!

Today

This morning we had visitors.  They are Singers of United Lands (S.O.U.L.).  They are:

Sonja-Croatia    Andrew-Nigeria     Shih-Hao-Taiwan    Gabriel-Gabriel

They arrived in the US just 2 weeks ago.  They have taught each other some of their native songs and brought instruments, objects, and costumes from their native country.  They sang 4 songs, 1 from each country, showed some instruments, and answered questions.  My class was so well-behaved, respectful, and responsive.  Here is a picture of the singers.  For more information, you can visit their website for performances and information.SOUL
