Students Create an Educational Development Plan – November 2018
Over the next 10 days, 7th and 8th-grade students will be gathering in group guidance sessions to create an Educational Development Plan (EDP), a state and district requirement to support students’ Career Pathways. The following is the classroom presentation to be used. Please discuss with your child the EDP (Educational Development Plan) they will be creating. Once students have created their EDP, they will have access to it and develop a planning portfolio. Students can build their resume, reach out to colleges, examine college programs, assess interest and learning styles and more.

Smith Has Art Talent – Meet Felix!
Smith has some amazing talent. We have an amazing art teacher who spent 16 days at sea researching and was selected from a pool of thousands of teachers. We also have many wonderfully talented students. Meet one of our 6th graders:
Hello, I am Felix Wilson-Schwartz. I attended a week-long photo camp called SURA based at the Arab American Museum. I had a really good time and experience. I think that I learned to be a better photographer. At the camp, we drove all around Dearborn and Detroit, to various locations including the DIA, The Dequindre Cut, The Detroit Artist Test Lab, and the Henry Ford Estates. My favorite photographer is Robert Capa. He was a photographer best known for his photographs of the Spanish Civil War. I also like Irving Penn. I learned about that photographer on a field trip at the photo camp. I like history!!!
We are fortunate to have such an inspiring young talent at Smith and look forward to following Felix’s work. On display at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn.

Family Check Up: Positive Parenting Prevents Drug Abuse
Families strive to find the best ways to raise their children
to live happy, healthy, and productive lives. Parents are often
concerned about whether their children will start or are already
using drugs such as substances, including the abuse of prescription drugs. Research supported
by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has shown the
important role that parents play in preventing their children
from starting to use drugs. Being proactive is effective!
The link below presents evidence-based information
developed by the Child and Family Center at the University
of Oregon. It highlights parenting skills that are important in
preventing the initiation and progression of drug use among
youth. Resource information is also available for reading in the Counseling Dept.

Seal of Biliteracy – Demonstrate Proficiency in Multiple Languages
Seal of Biliteracy
The Dearborn Public Schools’ Seal of Biliteracy is recognition for students who have attained proficiency in two or more languages (one being English). The Seal encourages proficiency in multiple languages and recognizes the value of language and cultural diversity. At the elementary level, the Seal is a celebration at the end of the year where we affirm the value of multiculturalism/bilingualism and involve parents in promoting bilingualism.
8th-grade students who are interested in completing the Seal of Biliteracy for 8th grade Honors Night, please see Dr. Elder or Mrs. Jedrzejowski this week. You must have a proficient score in the 8th grade ELA state test, be proficient in WIDA (if applicable), complete an essay in a foreign language you are fluent in, create a PowerPoint comparing and contrasting your targeted language’s cultural characteristics with the U.S., and summarize an interview presented in the foreign language. Presentations are scheduled for the beginning of May.
