Middle School College Night March 3, 2020
It is not too early to begin thinking about college. Middle School College Night provides an opportunity for 8th grade students and their parents to meet with representatives from colleges and universities—large/small, urban/suburban, public/private, in-state/out-of-state, etc. in order to begin exploring college options. This community service event provides a unique experience for 8th grade students and their parents to learn the steps of college admission. The open house format allows participants to drop in at any time during the event.

Dearborn Museum Hosts Kids STEM Event Saturday
STEM Saturday!
The Dearborn Historical Museum on Saturday, February 8 will host its first STEM Saturday event. This event will include three fun science experiments designed to get kids thinking about the science behind weather. Children will be able to make a tornado in a jar, a balloon rocket, and a window water cycle. This fun, afternoon activity will happen at the McFadden Ross House from 12 to 1:30 pm. Due to the cost of materials, admission to the event will be $2 per child.

Girls Engineering Day for 4th-6th Grade Students
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Detroit Section is pleased to announce its twelfth annual Girls’ Engineering Exploration (GEE) Day on Saturday, March 21. This year’s event will be held at the Michigan Science Center from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The free seminar, with lunch provided, is a part of SWE’s continuous effort to educate young women about the endless career opportunities that the engineering field has to offer.
The attached flyer: SWE flyer is for girls who may have an interest and enthusiasm in the STEAM subjects. SWE is striving to reach out and inspire girls that work hard and have the potential to become future engineers. The program is limited to 125 girls, so please encourage students and parents to respond as soon as possible.
Teachers and parents are also invited to attend an informational and interactive session at the same time as the student events. They will be provided with resources and opportunities to further engage their child/student in engineering activities. If teachers and/or parents are interested in attending they can register in the same link provided on the flyer. Lunch is provided and seating is limited.
Registration instructions are included on the flyer. The last date to register for the students, teachers, and parents is Monday, March 2, but seating is limited so please sign up as soon as possible.

DCMST Application is Now Available
DEARBORN CENTER FOR MATH, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (DCMST) is a community of learners sharing a high interest in math, science & technology. The 4 year program provides enrichment and acceleration through a hands-on problem solving approach that integrates technological applications with math and science.
- Applications for current Dearborn Public School students and out-of-district students are available on the DCMST website/blog (March 13, 2020 deadline)
- Applications are open to all students who will successfully complete Algebra 1 by June 2020
- Students will be selected based on standardized test scores (MStep, NWEA, Algebra 1 Sem 1 CA) and GPA

8th Graders Attended A Secondary School Options Presentation
December 13, students heard from district representatives about various programs and options Dearborn schools offers to students. This is a good time for 8th graders to begin preparing for their high school transition by examining some of the options. The slide presentation is posted for families to review. You can also reach out to your child’s counselor for questions.
High school counselors will be visiting Smith after the start of the semester and provide valuable information about requirements toward graduation.

NJHS & Student Council FOOD DRIVE Now-November 22 “Let’s do the math”! If all 564 students at O. L. Smith could generously donate at least 1 can or pet item or other nonperishable item, how many total items will be collected during the drive? 564 x 1 = 564 food or Pet items WOW! That’d be awesome! Drop off in any classroom, in the Atrium or during P/T Conferences.
