Poland!

Today we are doing a mystery skype! We found out that they are in the Northern Hemisphere. We also found out that they are not in the Western Hemisphere, so that means they are in the Northeast part of the world. Also, they are in Europe. We eventually narrowed it down to Poland. They also guessed where we are from, The USA. They didn’t know where Michigan was, so we told them about it. They are in a big city in Poland. We are telling them about cool places that we have here in Michigan.

Nathan explained to the people on the skype call what Greenfield Village is and why it is important. Hearing the cool places to visit in Poland makes us all want to travel there one day, wow! Even though the foods were super different than what we were used to, it sounds like a culinary trip of a lifetime. Were both explaining our popular foods for a typical lunch and or dinner. We asked them about their holidays. We pretty much have the same holidays. They have other holidays we don’t celebrate like their independence day and Weigela. They shared about how they don’t have uniforms and we realized we have that in common. Poland’s weather is very similar to us. Cloudy, windy, and warm, but humid.

Austria!

Hey Viking Nation! We are on a call with the Austrian MInister of Education in Vienna, Austria. They were very fun to talk to, and have a very fun culture! The city is known for their significant qualities of wine, music, and their very own authentic croissants. It was kinda funny, they liked hearing about us more than they liked talking about themselves. We were part of the Opening of Digital Didacta in Linz, Austria.

Mystery Call #7

We are currently asking questions to find the location we’re talking to. The caller on the other end is in the eastern hemisphere. He is not in Asia. He is on the coast of the Indian Ocean. The callers on our end figure out that he lives in Kenya. The temperature is 27 degrees Celsius(80 degrees Fahrenheit). The time there is currently 6 am. They have a lot of wildlife in that area. The higher schools are from grade 1 to grade 13. Most people like to visit the National Parks on weekends. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, crocodiles, hyenas, and gazelles can all be found in Kenya.

Lithuania!

The Smith students have now moved on to the call to Lithuania. There is a major time difference between our countries. The Smith students told the Lithuanian students about the activities that we have at O.L Smith. In Lithuania their landscape is mostly flat land with a lot of trees and bodies of water. The currency in Lithuania is Euros. There money looks different from US dollars, Euros are smaller and a different color.  -Amr Brown

Mystery Call #6

The O.L Smith students have now gone on to their 6th mystery call. Our unknown callers are in Eastern Europe. After several questions asked, the Smith students found that the callers are from Russia. The students from Russia discovered that we are from North America. The Smith students showed the students from Russia the “About Us” slide show. The Russia students said that they do get snow just like us in Michigan. The students from Russia had seemed to relate to some of the things mentioned in the slide show. The students from Russia also had a presentation for the Smith students to view. One of the slide shows presented was about the holidays celebrated in Russia. There are several holidays celebrated including “Victory Day.” This day celebrates the day when the Allied Forces claimed victory in WWII.

The Students at OL Smith are doing a mystery call with people from Europe. They have guessed we are from North America, and we have guessed they are from Russia. The students from Russia are learning things about Michigan from our slideshow we made prior to the call. The Russian students made their on slideshow about things they like such as food they eat.

-Gabby Palmeri

The interviewers from O.L. Smith guessed Lithuania and were incorrect, even though we were almost certain that that was right. They ended up being from Russia, when we guessed that they are in the Northern Hemisphere. The russian students are learning about our top 10 slide show about our attractions and people in Michigan. The russian students showed us the slideshow about their culture and their everyday lives, but mostly the food. They showed a second slideshow about all of the holidays in their country. There is a lot, including a “Defender of the Fatherland day” which I think is very cool. There was another slideshow just about the celebrities in their country, like Vladmir Putin, their president.

We got to share the similarities and differences between the autism programs in each of our schools! They also have many varsity sports and extracurricular activities. Mystery Call #4

Hey there Viking Nation!

We have embarked on our 4th mystery skype call of our 24 hour world tour! It is currently 10:52 p.m., and we are all anxious to see who our next skype call will be with. So far, our call seems to be coming from a country in the Northern Hemisphere, and has since been narrowed down to a country in Asia. We have also just discovered that their country borders an ocean or large body of water.  Our call failed as a result of the computer mandatorily shutting down.

Alright we’re back, and have answers to even more questions to determine their location in the world! They are in Japan, and more specifically, Maibara!

Hearing about our cultural differences was very interesting and eye-opening experience. The questions exchanged by both of our groups was an enlightening experience that I will never forget. Even between a language barrier, our call was still informative, and made us all realize that no matter the differences in culture, we can all relate on some personal level!

To learn about our culture, they were asking us questions like “Do you like disney?” and making heart symbols with our hands that either side could understand. It is so cool to see that people that our so different can be so much like us. We are talking about foods like pizza and taught them how to hit, “the woah”. I guess they did ok.

We also talked about our favorite songs and artists. Finally, we ended with a group photo and bid our Japanese friends farewell!

Signing off for now,

Samantha Shaffer and Oliva Draus- 24 Hour World Tour

Mystery Call #3

Mystery Call #3!  We are talking to people from Vietnam right now!  This is so cool! I can’t wait to learn about their daily life.  In Vietnam, the time is 9:39am while here, it is 10:39pm. #OLSmith24HourTour2019

Their flag is red with a yellow star in the center, and Vietnam borders china. Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam.

They have beautiful blue costumes with a little  white decor on them. Vietnam is located in Asia (in case you didn’t know). They eat rice everyday with chopsticks, and spring rolls are very popular along with samero and noodles. And today the 22nd or us but the 23rd for them is their last day of school so they aren’t wearing their uniforms but on a daily basis they do. They have a lot of small islands in Vietnam. Grapefruit and vegetables are grown in their backyard, 27 degrees Celsius is cold for them.

Vietnam borders China and the capital of Vietnam is Hanoi. In Vietnam it was Thursday 9:07 a.m while our time was Wednesday 10:08 p.m. Their flags’  color was red with a yellow star in the middle. Their traditional costume looked like a long blue robe with a very beautiful design. In Vietnam, they also eat rice everyday!  It is basically their daily dish. They also love Spring Rolls! Apparently May 23rd is their last day of school, which where they are is today. They also have an anthem like we do and the kids from Vietnam sing very well.  At this school they do have classes for kids to learn English. Also based on their claim that 27 degrees celsius ( 80.6 degrees fahrenheit) is cold in Vietnam, it seems it may be very hot in Vietnam.
