New Units this Quarter

Math- we are starting division and will review angles

Reading – Fantasy characteristics. We will be writing a Fantasy narrative soon, too, based on the characteristics we notice.

Writing – as noted above, we will be writing a Fantasy, but before that, we will review grammar skills. Many students are still needing to work on capitals and punctuation. Please check out on their google classroom assignments to see their typing skills with grammar.

Science – Moon and Sun is where we are beginning. We will delve deeper into Earth characteristics when we finish with moon and sun.

Social Studies – They are beginning Our Federal Government, and how cool that they can relate to what’s happening currently in our country with a new president.

Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading

It’s October!

Well, we can officially say we are no longer beginning the year, we’re in full force now! Let’s find out what’s going on this week.

Language Arts: Last week, we did the district writing prompt assessment. Your child will find out his/her score this week and make a goal for the next assessment. Please ask them about their scores to find out what they’re working on in writing. We will be writing personal narratives this week, and applying the skills from our writing goals into our stories.
In Reading, we will continue working in our Strategy Groups. In addition, we are doing a group project about tall tales. Students will show their knowledge in basic comprehension, visualizing, inferencing, and summarizing. This is also a test in collaborating, which can be a hard thing to do!

Math: This is our last week of geometry. This week we will do our study guide to prepare for the test which will be Thursday or Friday, depending on how everyone does with the study guide. We also took our first computation check test. Lots of students mastered their goal and moved to the next computation skill. Way to go, kids!

Science: Sadly we did not have time to do a whole group STEAM challenge because we were making Growth Mindset Monsters. (I’ll post pictures this week!) This week, we will be doing a STEAM challenge, and we will also be continuing our unit on Matter. We will dig deeper into the states of matter and how to change from one state to another, and we will show evidence and reasons for why certain things are chosen for specific jobs based on their physical properties.

Social Studies: They are continuing on with their geography unit with Mrs. Brady.

Some social skills we are working on this week are giving constructive criticism and waiting your turn.

STEAM weeks 1 and 2 and some updates!

First things first, here are some pictures from our first and second weeks of STEAM. The challenge last week was to make a bus that travels the farthest using a tissue box, 4 CDs, 8 rubber bands, and 2 pencils.

Our first place winners were Hassan, Shahd, and Abrar. Second place went to Mohamed, Stavros, and Ramzi.

Here are our ¨Perfect Failures,” AKA our non-winners, ha! fullsizerender-1

And this week, the challenge was to build the tallest tower using 25 notecards and masking tape. Hadeel, Nuha, and Abrar took first place.

Way to go, everyone!

Onto what our week will look like come Monday.

Math: We will continue with lines and angles, but will apply the concepts to polygons, especially types of triangles and quadrangles.

Science: Before we get into next week, I have to brag about how well everyone did in proving that gas is matter by creating their own experiments! Everyone had great ideas. I don´t have pictures, but make sure to ask your child! We will get into the properties of matter. Our focus will be how the states of matter change phase and describing their physical properties.

Social studies with Mrs. Brady: They are working on geography!

ELA: We are working on making inferences about characters using dialogue, thoughts, and actions of characters in the stories. In writing, we will be writing our first personal narrative.

Have a happy weekend!

Week one, hey it’s done!

Awesome first week! I’m so happy with our class and I can’t wait to get to know everyone even more.

Please, sign up for classdojo.com if you haven’t already!

Here is an overview of what we will be doing next week in each subject if anyone wants to look ahead to be prepared.

Firstly, we will be doing our first NWEA test of the year beginning on Tuesday. This week, we will take Reading, Math, and Science. Next Monday will be Language.

Math: During our first week, I did a computation inventory for every student to see where they are strongest and I put them in groups of adding, subtracting, or multiplying. I saw some AWESOME problem solving skills in big number multiplication problems. For groups that are ready, we will be talking about some strategies for multiplying this coming week, and many others will be reviewing adding and subtracting larger numbers.

We will also be diving into Lines and Angles this week. This is a third grade concept that we will be using to gain fourth grade skills of analyzing polygons later. Take a peek at this youtube video to refresh your or your child’s memory about angles.

Writing: We will start independent writing in Daily 5 this week, in addition to our first Writers Workshop lesson in writing a narrative story. Our focus will be including a detailed introduction, plot, and conclusion.

Reading: This week we will do some basic review of the CAFE menu strategies. I will be using the NWEA results to guide my small group instruction to give everyone very specific instruction where they need it. If you have questions about this, please, ask at conferences!

Science: In science, we are doing Properties of Matter. We will be experimenting with solids, liquids, and gases to find more about their properties in a first hand experience.

Social Studies: Fourth grade begins with Geography. I will get more into detail about this soon, but a sneak preview is that this year, we will be switching classes for social studies with Mrs. Brady’s class. It’s very exciting and a great warm up for middle school!

I hope I haven’t overwhelmed you with too much information, and I hope you have a great weekend! Remember – every child should read 30 minutes everyday, and myon.com and mobymax.com are awesome practice places!
