multiplication

Parents, please make sure your child is practicing their multiplication facts! This is urgent, as those who do not have their facts memorized will have a very, very hard time with our next unit which is division. Multiplication fact memorization is a MUST by 3rd grade, so if your child is struggling at this point, it is even more urgent. Please make sure they do flash card practice every single night for 10 minutes. Any dollar store will likely have flash cards, or they are easily made using paper and pencil.

MobyMax and xtramath.org are AMAZING ways to practice these basic facts. If you are curious what level your child has passed at this point, please send me a message and I will tell you. We have done our timed tests up to x4 so far.

January 29

Math: We will continue to work on multiplication. The class is doing REALLY well with area model for multiplication!

Reading: We are studying Text Structures; compare/contrast, description, cause/effect, problem/solution, and sequence. We will have a mini quiz about these this week. It isn’t anything to study for, it is just what we’ve been doing.

Science: We began our Earth science unit. The kids are super excited about it!

Social studies: We will have our unit test about immigration on Friday. This will be a computer test. Your kids should have been bringing their flash cards home to study. They are doing awesome when we practice.

Week of Jan 22

Reading: We will do the NWEA this week, as well as continue our reading test for DRA level. If you want to know your child’s DRA level, please send me a message on Dojo.

Writing: We are focusing on correct form of parts of speech.

Math: We are continuing on with multiplication, but will add in factor pairs this week, as well as prime and composite numbers.

Social studies: We will continue to talk about the Underground Railroad.

Science: We will hopefully be wrapping up electricity this week!

Questions to ask your kids after school

Here’s an awesome list of ways to ask your child how their day at school was without just getting, “good,” and “fine.” As an answer. I use these with my sons, and they’re much easier questions to get them talking.

1. What was the best thing that happened at school today? (What was the worst thing that happened at school today?)

2. Tell me something that made you laugh today.

3. If you could choose, who would you like to sit by in class? (Who would you NOT want to sit by in class? Why?)

4. Where is the coolest place at the school?

5. Tell me a weird word that you heard today. (Or something weird that someone said.)

6. If I called your teacher tonight, what would she tell me about you?

7. How did you help somebody today?

8. How did somebody help you today?

9. Tell me one thing that you learned today.

10. When were you the happiest today?

11. When were you bored today?

12. If an alien spaceship came to your class and beamed someone up, who would you want them to take?

13. Who would you like to play with at recess that you’ve never played with before?

14. Tell me something good that happened today.

15. What word did your teacher say most today?

16. What do you think you should do/learn more of at school?

17. What do you think you should do/learn less of at school?

18. Who in your class do you think you could be nicer to?

19. Where do you play the most at recess?

20. Who is the funniest person in your class? Why is he/she so funny?

21. What was your favorite part of lunch?

22. If you got to be the teacher tomorrow, what would you do?

23. Is there anyone in your class who needs a time-out?

24. If you could switch seats with anyone in the class, who would you trade with? Why?

25. Tell me about three different times you used your pencil today at school.

Oct 16

Math: We will be continuing practicing rounding. I am planning to do our unit test on Friday, but with the power outage, it may not be until Monday. We will review number forms, place/place value, comparing numbers, and rounding.

Language Arts: We are still working on finding evidence for setting. They are doing awesome with finding evidence and citing the page number. In writing we are working on making our opinion papers stronger. They made awesome introduction paragraphs about if kids can make big differences in the world.

Science: We will be doing another investigation to find out how force and motion work are related and how you can change the motion of an object depending on the force.

Social Studies: We will do a mini quiz about the five themes of geography, then start moving on to how regions are separated.
