Note from PTA

Haigh Families,

October’s PBIS celebration is going to be a DANCE PARTY with cider and donuts! The kids are really excited for this event, so we want to make it special for them. In order to do this, we need your help. We are asking for donations of apple cider. If you are able to donate some cider for our PBIS event, we would REALLY appreciate it.

If you would like to donate, please return this form to your child’s teacher by Friday, October 26th.

Donations of apple cider can be brought to school on Monday, October 29th.

Thank you so much for your continued support – it is appreciated 🙂

The PBIS Committee

New this week

Social Studies: We will be finishing our unit about the government, writing an opinion essay on this topic, then starting our first HISTORY unit!

Science: We will continue working on matter, but this week we will be focusing on properties of matter and physical/chemical changes.

Writing: Like stated above, we will be working on opinion writing. We will talk about how to use sources to make your opinion even stronger!

Language Arts: We will be continuing to talk about how to quote a resource correctly as well as making inferences based on literary text. Our current whole group book is RULES by Cynthia Lord. Talk to your kiddos about it! It’s a great read!

My fingers are crossed that reading groups will begin this week! I think we are FINALLY finished with NWEA and I only have about three more DRA tests to go. Send me a message on class dojo if you’d like to know what your child’s DRA level is as of now. There will be an NWEA report going home as soon as we have them in.

This week in 5th

Reading: We will be discussing how to correctly quote an article or book when responding to reading as well as how to dig deeper into articles and stories.

Writing: We will be starting our first opinion essay of the year. This week, we will get into the format of an opinion essay.

Science: This week will be fun! The kids will be creating their own investigation to prove that air is matter. Their materials will be one balloon, a scale, and a tape measure. They’ll also be using their understanding of properties and characteristics.

Social Studies: We will continue to work on understanding the Federal Government and Constitution.

We will also be focusing on using compassion and empathy this week during our daily community meetings in our classroom. Each day, we will start with a community meeting to help strengthen our social/emotional skills.

Other news: If you ordered from Scholastic, the books will be here this week, I believe. There was a system error on scholastic’s website and the order was delayed. Thanks for your patience!

New School Year!

Welcome to fifth grade! I’m very excited to meet everyone on Monday.

A little about me… My name is Emily Shupe, I have been teaching in Dearborn since 2009. My first year I taught kindergarten, then 4th grade until this year. I got my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at U of M – Dearborn.

I am married and have two boys of my own, Declan and Greyson. They are in first grade and pre-school this year. I also have two cute dogs named Soco and Pinot.

I am very excited to start my new adventure at a new school! I have heard nothing but great things about the school community and I am so happy to be a part of it.

This is going to be a great year! I can’t wait!
