Birthday Party Treat today

Hello,

A student had a birthday party today and glass mason jars came home. Inside of this jar, cigarette shaped candy was inside (which I was unaware of). Please talk to your child that it really is candy and nothing else. Also, for your child’s safety, please be sure the glass jar made it out of the backpack and it stays at home.

Thank you!

Third Grade Parent Meeting

We will be holding a third grade parent meeting on Wednesday, September 12th from 10:35-11:15 in Room 206. Please plan on attending! We will be sharing lots of important information about the year.

WELCOME BACK!

WELCOME BACK!

Welcome to third grade!  I hope you had a great, relaxing summer with family and friends. My name is Ms. Shalhout and I am looking forward to having a successful year teaching your child.

Let me start by introducing myself. This will be my eighth year of teaching (time flies)!  I attended Wayne State University and completed my master’s degree in Bilingual/Bicultural Education. I also have two endorsements in math and science. I enjoy spending time with my six nieces and nephews, reading mystery novels, and shopping. We will have a lot of fun together while learning!

The following contains information pertaining to our classroom procedures and policies. I hope you find it useful. There will be more information coming soon regarding upcoming parent meetings and Open House.

Instructional Focus– The instructional focus this year will be driven by the Common Core and State Standards. Students will be actively participating in setting their own personal learning goals for the year. Classroom instruction will be focused through content and language objectives. Objectives will be shared before a lesson with a reflection component at the end of each lesson.

Student Expectations- It is essential students arrive promptly at 8:30 every day. Students are expected to be prepared for class with all their necessary materials. All students must put forth their best effort daily in order to meet all expectations.

Communication Folders – I will be providing your child with a blue communication folder.  It is the student’s responsibility to bring this to class daily, since they will be turning in any work, and collecting any new notes in this folder. Here you will find any returned work, notes, and handouts.

Planners-Planners will be provided for students. This is where students write down any classroom reminders or assignments they must complete. Planners must be signed by a parent everyday and brought back to class daily.

Behavior-We use a color system for behavior. Each student will start on green, but will have an opportunity to move up to purple for outstanding behavior. Students can also move down when a rule is broken to the color yellow, orange, red, or blue. More of this will be discussed at the parent meeting. Students will circle the color of their behavior each day in the planners. If a student is not on green, I will also initial the color of their behavior for the day with a possible note explaining the behavior.

Supplies– I have attached a copy of the third grade supply list that your child will need. Any other donations will be greatly appreciated.

Absences – It is necessary to call the office when your child will be absent.  The number is 313-827-2300. Please send a note or call ahead if your child will need to be dismissed early for appointments.

Recess-This year, we will be taking two 15 minute recess breaks every day (morning and afternoon). Yes, two recess breaks! All Dearborn Public Schools will be implementing this initiative. These recess breaks do not include lunch recess. Please be sure your child is always dressed for the weather.

Snack-Students may bring in a healthy snack if they choose. I only allow fruits, vegetables, string cheese, yogurt, or granola bars. Students will not be allowed to bring in or eat any unhealthy snack such as chips, muffins or cookies.

Water bottles-Students are encouraged to bring in water bottles with a cap to cut down on needing to use the classroom water fountain. Water is the only liquid allowed in the classroom.

Birthdays- If you wish to celebrate your child’s birthday in the classroom, please let me know at least one day in advance so I can plan accordingly. Only cupcakes or individual treat bags are allowed to help save time. No drinks or juice boxes please.

Blog-Please follow my blog for an update of weekly spelling words, announcements, and important events happening in the class at iblog.dearbornschools.org/shalhol/

Remind App-I have attached instructions on how to sign up for classroom updates on the Remind app.  Please sign up for this so you are able to receive class announcements.

Questions and Concerns– Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child. The best way to contact me is through email at shalhol@dearbornschools.org, write a message in your child’s planner, or send a note with your child.  If you call during school hours, it will go directly to voicemail since we are teaching.  We will return your call as soon as possible. Please do not wait until a scheduled conference to contact me regarding concerns.

I look forward to a great school year!

Robotics Applications due Friday, June 8th

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE ROBOTICS TEAM

Dear Parents/Families,

Geer Park is embarking on our second year with robotics to further our STEAM initiative (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). We are looking to continue our First Lego League (FLL) team and FLL Junior team. We are recruiting 18-20 students in grades 1-5 to join our teams. If you are interested in robotics, designing and programming a robot, then think about applying to be on the team. If you think you are interested, write a short essay explaining why you believe you should be selected.

We will be meeting once a week on Wednesday mornings from 7:45-8:30 and possibly Tuesday afternoons from 3:35-4:30.

You will be selected on the following criteria:

  • Strong, edited, neatly written essay. Include at least 3 reasons why you would be a great candidate for robotics.  It may be typed or handwritten
  • Good attendance
  • Behavior
  • Teacher recommendation
  • Parents and students must commit to dropping off and picking up their children on time and committing to at least  one Saturday competition in December (date to be determined).

If you were in robotics this year, you still must apply again if you wish to be chosen for next year’s team.

Write your short essay and turn in to Ms. Shalhout or Ms. Donoghue by Friday, June 8.
