Classroom Moms and Dads

* A NOTE ABOUT CLASSROOM MOMS AND DADS WENT HOME TODAY*

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

Research shows that students who have a strong support system at home and school are those who are the most well-equipped to achieve success. Schools with strong parent-teacher relationships provide even more opportunities for our students’ success and often outperform other schools in academic achievement and growth. In an effort to strengthen our parent-teacher relationships, we are seeking to assign a “Classroom Mom or Dad” to each of our classrooms.

What is a “Classroom Mom or Dad”?

A Classroom Mom or Dad is the parent or legal guardian of a child in a classroom. Classroom Moms or Dads are volunteers who take a lead role in facilitating communication between other parents and the teacher, the PTA, and occasionally school administration. This can vary a little from class to class, teacher to teacher depending on the grade level and the time of year. For the most part, as a Classroom Mom or Dad you will communicate with the teacher on a schedule that works for both of you to organize, plan, and coordinate special events, celebrations, parties, or field trips. Additionally, Classroom Moms or Dads act as liaisons for their school’s PTA, encouraging participation in their events from the classroom you are supporting.

At this time we are seeking to assign one Classroom Mom or Dad per classroom. If this is something you are interested in, please fill out the information below. Please understand that this is a year-long physical and social commitment that will require your energy, patience, and time. By filling this out, you are demonstrating an understanding of the importance of this commitment and your name will be taken into consideration when selecting a Classroom Mom or Dad.

Please complete the bottom portion and return to your child’s teacher by Monday, September 25.

What we are learning for the next few weeks!

Hello, here is an overview of what we are covering in each subject. Please be sure to continually study and review these concepts:

Math: Telling time to the five minute, minute and using words such as “half past”, “quarter to” and “quarter after.” They must also know elapsed time to the minute. For example, how much time has passed between 11:31 and 1:50?

Science: We have began our Force and Motion unit. Students will need to understand the concept of and definitions of: force, balanced and unbalanced forces, pushes, pulls, gravity, Newton’s first law

Social Studies: We will be studying Michigan’s geography! We will study the human and natural characteristics of our beautiful state. Students must understand where things are on a map using directional words (north, south, east, west, Michigan is to the west of _____, east of ______, etc). We will also study the location of our 5 Great Lakes, and where and why certain vegetation like apples and cherries grow in certain places in Michigan.

Writing: We are focusing heavily for the next week or so on solid paragraph writing. Please be sure your child understands what a complete sentence is and what a paragraph is (Topic Sentence, 3 detail sentences, closing sentence)

Daily 5/Reading: Please be sure your child reads daily for at least 20 minutes.
