Classroom Updates

Here is what is happening in our classroom:

Math: We began our Multiplication and Division Unit. Students should begin studying their multiplication facts. We will begin taking weekly quizzes and they cannot move on to the next factor until they pass. For example, this week is x 0 and x 1.

They must understand how to show multiplication using equal groups, an array and repeated addition.

They must also be able to decide if a story problem is multiplication or division and show their work to solve.

Science: We are learning all about Weather and Climate this card marking. Students will be learning about the water cycle and should be able to explain how clouds are formed, they will collect weather data and graph it. We will also learn the different climate types of the world: polar, temperate, dry, and tropical.

Social Studies: We are now learning about the History of Michigan. We begin by exploring how the Native Americans were the first inhabitants of Michigan, followed by the French and then the British. We will then explore how Michigan gained statehood.

Writer’s Workshop: Students are working on publishing their informational writing. They are creating 5 paragraph essays about Michigan’s geography. We will begin Opinion writing this week or early next. Students must write a 5 paragraph essay giving reasons why a certain season is their favorite.

Daily 5: Please work on these strategies with your children:
-Finding nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns and adverbs in writing and reading.
-Determine the main idea of a paragraph, page, chapter, or book
-Summarizing a story
-Making an inference
