Here are some ideas for how to work on speech while playing with your child.
When playing with blocks, puzzles, ball, bubbles, etc.:
- Work on taking turns/joint attention
- Label the toy – type, color, size
- Withhold the toy until your child requests it through sign/gesture/word
- Use core vocabulary when playing: up, down, in, out, on, off, more
When playing with toy cars:
- Make car noises “beep beep, vroom, crash”
- Make your cars STOP and GO. At school the children like when we do a 1, 2, 3 count before ex: “1, 2, 3…Go!”
- Say “uh oh” or “oh no” and make the cars crash into something
