Good evening and HAPPY EARTH DAY !

 I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend as much as I did! In lieu of Earth day today, our Social Justice Club at Smith is collecting recyclable pop bottles and cans all week.  If you have any recyclable pop bottles or cans that you could  donate, please deliver them to your Advisory teacher.

This week at Smith and in the Science classroom: 

  • Care to the Core Event will take place on Monday.  We will follow the Friday intervention circle.  We will meet with our advisory students in the afternoon to attend this event as a circle.
  • Purpose of the “Care to the Core” activity is:

1. to have the students understand that each one of us brings something with us that is useful
and good
2. for the students to start looking at each other as having gifts and not just focusing on the
faults
3. how people who work together can conquer most anything 

In Science:

  • Students will be assessed online on Monday (A-Day) and Tuesday (B-Day) on “Traits and Heredity”.  Goodluck to all and I hope the powerpoint slideshow and study guide along with our classroom discussions has helped you become prepared for the test.
  • Afterwards this week students will work in pairs  then share their comparisons and generate a list of general characteristics for each mode of reproduction, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both.
    • Their Essential Question would be: What are the advantages and disadvantages of sexual and asexual reproduction? Is one “better” than the other?
    • Scenario: You are an Ecologist who wants to find out. To answer these questions students compare 5 aspects of organisms that reproduce sexually with organisms that reproduce asexually. They will begin their study by looking at different organisms they are assigned with articles about them. Once their comparisons have been made, they will share the information with all of the other ecologists in our class to draw general conclusions about each method of reproduction.
  • Every Friday, from 2:17 p.m.- 2:55 p.m. we have Study Hall where students report to one of their core subject teachers to complete a missing assignment, test/quiz retake, or take part in a re-teach.  Please make sure you are checking STUDENT/PARENT Connect to help your child make a choice as to where they would like to be placed every Friday for Study Hall intervention.
  • 6th Grade M-Step is scheduled for Tuesdays May 1 and May 8 (Language Arts then Math). Please make sure your child has visited the M-STEP practice link to become familiar with the website.
  • Best of LUCK to ALL 6th graders for the Science Test on Trait and Heredity.  I know they will meet their goal and succeed!
