Dear Families,
Welcome to the fifth grade. I am looking forward to an exciting year. You will be amazed at just how much your child will grow this year. I hope to work closely with each family. It is important that we keep the lines of communication open. Please check your child’s take-home folder daily. One side will be marked “stay home”. These items should be taken out daily. The other side will be marked “return”. Any item on this side needs to be returned to school.
Snack – It is essential to keep your child alert and motivated throughout the school day. We will have two snacks in this class (morning and afternoon). I ask that you send only healthy snacks (fruit, vegetables, crackers, cheese, dry cereal, etc.) These snacks take place during classroom activities. There is no time to stop to wash, peel, or prepare snacks. Please do not send cookies, cupcakes, fruit snacks, fruit drinks, or yogurt. Your child may bring a water bottle to school each day. Please be sure it has a tight seal.
Labels – Please be sure to label everything that comes to school.
Homework – Your child will have homework. Please stress the importance of completing homework assignments neatly, carefully, and turning them when they are due. Your child should be encouraged to read for 20 minutes every evening. This will be recorded on their “Reading Log” each night. You will be asked to initial the log EVERY evening. They will be graded on this log.
Communication – A folder will come home with your child every day with completed work, homework, notes from school and the community. Please look at this folder daily. Anything on the “Stay Home” side should be emptied. I will also sign planners daily. I expect you to look at and sign your child’s planner EVERY DAY. This is also where you can write notes if you have questions.
Suggested Supplies – The following is a list supplies for your child to bring to class.
Pencils
Red pens
Loose-leaf paper
Colored markers
Pencil sharpener (with lid)
Pencil top erasers
1 dry erase marker with sock to erase
Glue stick
2 boxes Kleenex tissue
2 bottles of antibacterial soap
1 set of Multiplication Facts Flashcards (1-12)
More supplies may be needed as the school year progresses. I will send future notes home as needed.
Finally, thank you for your support. I am pleased to be a part of the wonderful staff at Henry Ford Elementary. I am looking forward to a fun-filled year of learning with your children.
Sincerely,
Ms. Abraham
