High Quality Work and Why It Matters

63225448

Aristotle once said, “Quality is not an act, it is a habit.”

When a student completes her schooling and moves into adult life, she will be judged not by her ability to perform on tests of basic skills, but by the quality of her character and the quality of her work. When do we expect young people to develop the passion and skills to do work of quality if we do not support this sharply and deeply in school?

For students and teachers, excellence is built through an ongoing process of examining models of strong student work, and examining their own work, to create a shared vision of what we are aiming for: what constitutes quality. For teachers, this process informs instruction and planning; for students, it promotes critical thinking, creativity and craftsmanship.

Deeper Learning: Highlighting Student Work

Committing to Your Education

President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”

In my experience, students struggle with finding value and/or relevance in the work they are asked to complete while in the classroom.

In my opinion, it is the job of an effective teacher to be able to help students see the value and/or relevance in what we are doing in class. At the same time, an effective student needs to open their minds to welcome those opportunities.

An effective student TRUSTS that the teacher knows the whys (PURPOSE) and the whats (CONTENT), and an effective teacher is able to guide students through the hows (ANALYSIS/PROCESS).

Students, please trust your teachers – and have an open mind.

It will be worth it in the end!

Absent? Here are some helpful tips to avoid falling behind!

Upon returning from an ababsentsence, you should

  1. First, ask a fellow classmate what you missed.
  2. If you need clarification, ask me – your teacher!
  3. If it’s a worksheet, approach me after class to get a copy.

Have a system in place – don’t let absences bring you down!

Be accountable – every day of your education counts towards your present and future success!
