Reading a book with your child
I have spoke to some parents that are looking for tips on how to read leveled books with their child. I recorded myself going over a book that may be familiar to your child. Some may even have this in their book bag. You can do this same thing with books that your child gets from me in their digital book bag.
Tips for reading with your child.
When your child is reading from their book bag, whether that is the digital book bag or actual leveled books, someone should always be there to listen, guide and encourage their reading. Below, you will find some tips for fluency:
Ways to Support during reading:
*When an error is made WAIT to give your
child a chance to work on it independently.
*When you are certain they are going to
keep going, stop them saying something like,
“Try that again,” or “Make it match.”
Ways to Complement during reading:
*When an error is made WAIT to give your
child a chance to work on it independently.
*When you are certain they are going to
keep going, stop them saying something like,
“Try that again,” or “Make it match.”
-am words book and activities
Below you can click on the links to print a book that contains -am words. Also in the book, you will review the words: ‘this’ ‘is’ ‘like’. Under the book, you can print an activity sheet that will give you more practice. If you can not print at home, you can read the book on your screen and complete the activities using a notebook instead.
Listening for sounds
Below, you can click on a link to a very helpful article from Reading Rockets.
Phonemes are the individual sounds that each letter makes. We spend lots of time working on this in kindergarten. Your child may know the names of letters, but it is also important to know the sounds that each letter makes in order to learn to read.
At home, you can play around with words and sounds. Make up silly sentences… “My mom makes marvelous meatballs” “Silly Sally sings silly songs”
Ask your child to listen for the 1st sound in a word. “Do you hear the “t” sound in the word “top”?
When reading a leveled book together, if your child comes to an unknown word and asks you for help, help them point to the first letter of the word. Ask “What sound does that letter make?” Help them to make the sound…look at the picture..stretch the sounds..put them together. ALWAYS use the picture for support!
Reading a Poem Together
Watch the video below and print the poem to look for words that we know. We can also use strategies to read words that are new to us to!
Online Book Bag
If you have not yet signed up to get books from me throughout the week, please do so. I have online books to assign to you at your child’s level. Many students are already getting books each week and they are able to read them on their device without printing them out. I am also able to see when you child completes each book and we can communicate about the books that they have read.
