Weekly Update for the Week of 11/12

Happy Monday! Our class is hard at work exploring our new units for the month of November and are looking forward to the upcoming holidays. As the weather is starting to get colder, please remember that we still go outside for recess. For recess if there is snow, your child must bring snow pants, boots, and gloves in order to play in the snow. Please remember to check the weather before sending your child in to school.

In addition, thank you to all of those parents who volunteered, baked, or donated items to the Holiday Boutique. Our basket was the talk of the town! We couldn’t have done it without you.

Lastly, listed below are some of the topics we will be covering this week and some of the events that will be occurring!

Reading- Figurative language (idioms, literal/non-literal, etc.) , setting personal reading goals, and asking questions.

Writing- Opinion writing about whether or not we should serve turkey for Thanksgiving.

Math- Using a number line as a strategy to tell time the nearest minute on a clock and solving word problems using intervals on a clock.

Social Studies- Early history of Michigan. Discussing a historian’s role, primary and secondary sources, and native American tribes in Michigan.

Science- This week in science we explored the mystery, “How can you predict when it’s going to storm?” We learned about differences between fair weather clouds and storm clouds, and the role of wind direction in determining whether a rain cloud will pass overhead. You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by looking at clouds together and asking, “What kind of clouds do you think those are? I wonder if it will rain…” Ask your child if they’d like to show you their Storm Spotter’s Guide, a small book they made to help them remember how to use the clouds to predict the weather.

Spelling- content words: weather, history, idiom, number, and hour

spelling pattern (multi syllabic v/cv): music, basic, honor, tiger, and olive

Leader in Me: Begin with the End in Mind- Talking about the importance of considering consequences before doing something. Ask your child, “What are the positive consequences of working toward your academic goal?”

Upcoming Events

Tuesday- Parent Teacher Conferences 4:30-7:30 and PTA meeting from 7-8

Thursday- Student Lighthouse Meeting 8:50 am and Parent Teacher Conferences 4:30-7:30

Friday- Popcorn Friday

Math Homework on Monday

Good Evening!

This week your child learned about plotting time on a number line. Tonight’s homework is testing their understanding of counting by fives and ones on the number line as a strategy to tell time to the nearest minute on the clock.

If you need help with this strategy, please see the YouTube video below for guidance. In addition, if you look under the math help page on our web page you will find the homework helper for Eureka Math.

Let me know if you need any help!

Math Manipulatives Needed

Good Sunday Afternoon Parents!

This week for math we will be discussing measurement and relating measurement to real-life use. We will begin by discussing time and how to solve word problems using time. Following that we will be working on decomposing kilograms. In order to really explore weight, we will be measuring items using a metric scale and a pan balance.

The first activity regarding weight will be exploring kilograms using beans and rice. As a class we will be measuring bags of beans and rice and decomposing them into weights of kilograms and grams.  If you would be interested in helping out our class by donating a bag of beans or rice please just let me know! If not, no worries!

Hope your weekend is going well!

Wednesday Math Homework

Good Evening Parents!

Today your child explored time as a continuous measurement using a stopwatch. We measured using minutes and seconds within our class! Tonight’s homework is on pgs. 91-92. Students are expected to try out problems 1 and 3 (2 is not required).

Listed below is the video if you need extra help!

Math Test

Today your child brought home their End-of-Module math test. As we have discussed before, Eureka math is Dearborn’s new math program. This new program is very different from Everyday Math, and is helping students look at math differently. Since this is still a new program with different expectations and methods, please be patient with your child if they are scoring lower than normal. Hopefully by next module assessment your child may be comfortable enough with the new curriculum to go above and beyond.

In addition, you may have noticed that the test is scored quite differently than other tests in class. This is because with Eureka math, all assessments are graded based upon a rubric. Most questions are graded on a four point scale. Listed below is the rubric for Module 1.

Module 1 End-of-Module Rubric

If you have any questions about how I graded the assessment, please just email or call.

Thank you!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences are almost here! Listed below are the names of the families that have signed up for conferences. If you have yet to sign up, please just email me at robeym@dearbornschools.org and we can set up a time for you. The slots that are left blank are available to choose from!

If for some reason your time no longer works for your family, please let me know so I can accommodate you. I’m looking forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress!

Weekly Update for the Week of 11/05

Image result for halloween thank you

Good Evening!

I just wanted to give a personal thank you to all of those parents who have donated to our class for our Halloween party and our Michigan Made Project. It really has made a huge difference and our class thanks you!

Today your child has brought home their science, social studies, and math tests. Please review them with your child and return them to school signed by Wednesday.  As third graders they can retake their tests if they score below an 80%. If you would like a retake on any test, please just email me and we can set up a time that your child can stay after school to complete their retake.

Listed below are the items we are working on this week to get our next card marking up and running!

Reading- Teaching literal and non-literal phrases and meanings. Discussing summarizing a story using the 5 finger Retell (Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then).

Writing- Opinion and Persuasive Writing Essays. Third graders have strong opinions about their world. They want a phone, longer lunch time in school, or better playground equipment for the park near their home. They will make an argument for just about anything around them. This unit is geared to harness all that energy and begin to build a persuasive essay. The focus will be around building a strong persuasive essay that includes a strong claim with reasons and convincing evidence. Writers will learn their voices have power and that power can ultimately make changes in their lives.

Math- Students begin by learning to tell and write time to the nearest minute using analog and digital clocks in Topic A (3.MD.1).  They understand time as a continuous measurement through exploration with stopwatches and use the number line, a continuous measurement model, as a tool for counting intervals of minutes within 1 hour (3.MD.1).  Students see that an analog clock is a portion of the number line shaped into a circle.  They use both the number line and clock to represent addition and subtraction problems involving intervals of minutes within 1 hour (3.MD.1).

Science- Unit 2 – Weather & Climate; Patterns and Natural Hazards- This week in science we explored the mystery, “Where do clouds come from?” Your child observed important clues, such as the fact that water changes from a liquid to a gas (even without boiling!). You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by pointing out water vapor whenever you see it rising off hot water in the kitchen or bath, or pointing out tiny droplets of water forming on a mirror, windows, or glasses. Engage their minds by asking, “Wow, why do you think this is happening?”

Social Studies- Unit 2- Michigan’s History; In this unit, students use primary and secondary sources of information to explore the early history of Michigan. They begin by examining the work of historians and the types of questions they ask

Spelling- content words: minute, second, cycle, and cloud

spelling pattern (vc/cv): button, bottle, rabbit, soccer, and tunnel

Leader in Me- Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind

Upcoming Events

Tuesday- No School due to Election Day (Go out and Vote)!

Wednesday- First Class/Assembly and  Emotional Bank Account Ornaments Due

Thursday- PBIS Reward Dearborn Marching Band, Parent Teacher Conferences, and Raffle Basket Picture for Class

Saturday- Holiday Boutique
