Also friendly reminder that tomorrow your child’s poem selections are needed for our Poetry Slam on Tuesday. Please let me know if you have any questions about this assignment.

Weekly Update for the Week of 04/22

Spring is fully in the air and we are enjoying this warmer weather in room 208. During this week our class will be working hard preparing for M-STEP and will be learning various test taking strategies for the test. Please make sure to keep encouraging your child with positive words regarding the test. I will be sending home a note on Monday next week about various strategies to use at home before the test, so keep an eye out!

Listed below are some of our “Big Rocks” this week that we are working on.

Reading- Nonfiction images in a text and how they help us fully understanding the meaning of text. Using context clues to make sense of unknown vocabulary words, and short-answer responses for M-STEP

Writing- Text-dependent analysis. Using evidence from a text (fiction/nonfiction) to come up with a writing response about the topic.

Math-  Continue discussing placing fractions on a number line (including fractions greater than 1 whole), comparing fractions and whole numbers on a number line, and discussing equivalent fractions using a number line.

Science-

This week, we will learn how living in space can affect people’s and animals’ bodies. Students examined how Scott Kelly, a NASA astronaut who spent an entire year aboard the International Space Station, changed after being in space. Then they imagined how their own physical traits (height, strength, balance) might change after living in space.

You can support your child’s curiosity about space by watching a video together of a surprising phenomenon in space. Col. Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency demonstrates an answer to the question, “What happens when you wring out a wet cloth in space?”: https://safeyoutube.net/w/OFPd.

Social Studies- Discuss what drives Michigan’s economy today, specialization and interdependence within the economy, and Michigan’s economic future.

Spelling- content words: reduce, scarcity, tourism, diagram, and poetry

word pattern /are/: care, stare, fare, aware, and hare

Leader in Me- Habit 6: Synergize teaches us that when two or more people work together, they accomplish more than either could have alone. Synergy is more than compromise, which results in both people losing a little. And it is more than cooperation, where you basically double your options. Leaders go beyond cooperation to creativity, which results in achieving amazing and seemingly impossible results. Discuss with your child, “What are the benefits of involving others?”

Module 5 Mid-Module Assessment Rubric and Tonight’s Homework

Good Afternoon Parents,

Since we had such a short week last week, I completely forgot to post the rubric for the Mid-Module Assessment for Module 5. I do apologize for this. I must have had bunnies and chocolate on the brain! You can see the rubric for Module 5 Mid-Module Assessment below.

Mod. 5 Mid-Module Rubric

During class today, your child reviewed labeling any fraction on a number line (including fractions greater than 1 whole).  Today’s homework was from our Succeed book pgs. 73-75 (problems 1,2, and 4). While reviewing the exit tickets from Thursday, I realized that several students were struggling with this concept. If your child is struggling with fractions greater than 1 whole on the number line, I highly encourage you to check out the video below.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions regarding the assessment or classwork.

Poetry Slam

Dear Parents,

In honor of National Poetry Month, our third grade class will be having a Poetry Slam on April 30, 2019. During our Poetry Slam, we will be sharing our favorite poems that we have read over the course of the school year.

In order to make this event a success, your child will need to select a favorite poem to perform. Feel free to use poems that we have used in class, children’s poetry books, or even the internet as a tool to select a poem. Please have your child fill out their top two poem choices on the form that was sent home today (an extra copy can be found below) and return it to class by Thursday, April 25th .

Next, your child will have to read their poem fluently in front of the class and share a picture that represents their poem. This picture can be drawn on a poster board, construction paper, or even using Google Draw.

We highly encourage students to reread their poems several times or even memorize them. As a speaker, they will be receiving a grade on their presentation. Please see the rubric below as to how students will be graded on this assignment.

Lastly, we would love it if you came to our Poetry Slam. It will be held on April 30th, from 2:15-3:15. We hope to see you there!

Today’s Homework

Good Afternoon Parents,

Today during math your child learned about fractions on a number line. During class we watched the following song about fractions on a number line. Feel free to re watch and enjoy. We also will be completing math homework for Module 5 Lesson 14 (problems 1-2). If you need some extra guidance, feel free to watch the Eureka Math video below as well.

While we were reviewing opportunity cost in class, we began discussing incentives with businesses. Economic incentives are what motivates you to behave in a certain way, while preferences are your needs, wants and desires. Some examples of this would include: buy one/get one sales, free gift card with purchase, coupons, etc.

If you and your child come across an economic incentive, feel free to send it in with them to class. I will be offering extra credit for students who bring in an example of an economic incentive.

Weekly Update for the Week of 04/15

Spring is in the air this week, with our shortened week due to the Easter holiday. I do apologize for being a little late with this week’s post about our current events. Please make sure to keep working on your child’s lead measures at home. Our end of year assessments are quickly approaching and our lead measures help us make sure that we are reaching our W.I.G.S (Wildly, Important, Goals) by the end of the year. If you have any questions about your child’s lead measures, feel free to reach out to me.

Reading- Wrapping up main idea and details, nonfiction text features, and M-STEP practice assessments for ELA.

Writing- Text Dependent Analysis writing and narrative writing

Social Studies- Opportunity cost, scarcity, choice, and Michigan’s economy today.

Science-

This week, we will learn how living in groups helps many animals survive, including wolves, meerkats, ravens, and ants!

You can support your child’s curiosity at home! Look for different kinds of animals near your home, and ask your child your child for each kind of animal, “Do you think it lives in a group? How do you think living in a group helps it survive?”

Math- Discussing fractions on a number line and how to place them. Mid-Module assessment for module 5 was given on Monday. Keep a watch for that assessment coming back!

Spelling- No spelling this week

Leader in Me- “I Messages”- The second part of Habit 5 is “Then to be Understood.” Giving feedback is an important part of seeking to be understood. Leaders know there are two things to consider when giving feedback. First, the feedback should be in the other person’s best interest. Second, “I” messages are less threatening, so people are more willing to listen. Make sure to ask your child what an “I” message is.

Upcoming Events

Wednesday- Team Sports

Thursday- Leader in Me Lighthouse Review (please have your child wear a Lindbergh shirt) and ELG tutoring

Friday- No School
