Math Homework for the Week of 10/02

Happy Rainy Wednesday! Today your child has practiced using arrays to model the distributive property. This was used to find related multiplication facts by breaking them down into small groups. We then were able to solve these facts by adding and subtracting equal groups (rows) from the arrays.

Tonight’s homework will be Module 1 Lesson 9, from page 35-37 in their Succeed book.

This was a pretty challenging subject for students to understand. We broke this down in smaller groups with students and we will be doing another day on this concept tomorrow. Please watch the video below to help your child with their homework.

Weekly Update for the Week of 09/30

Tomorrow marks the beginning of October! Wow does time fly! Today your child was able to speak to a real Dearborn Firefighter who was able to teach us all about fire safety and how to stay safe within our community. Make sure to you talk to your whole family to set up an emergency plan in case a fire does happen. Practice this! Also, if you need a smoke alarm feel free to reach out to your local fire station. We found out today that they will give you a smoke alarm and install it for free!

In regards to our field trip coming up on this Friday, if you have signed up to chaperone our trip make sure to stop by the office and make sure your background check is up to date. We are looking forward to our trip to the Fire Station!

Lastly, listed below is a run-down of what we are covering this week in class.

Reading- Setting up our reader’s notebook, discussing respectful book-talk conversations, beginning our work on writing station, and discussing author’s purpose.

Writing- Planning and brainstorming persuasive letter topics. Students will begin to draft with a graphic organizer potential topics.

Math- Analyzing arrays of 2-3. Demonstrating the commutative and distributive properties of multiplication using arrays. We also will begin reviewing for our mid-module assessment this week.

Social Studies- Discovering human and natural characteristics of Michigan. We also will create a map of me, where students will talk about the relative/absolute locations of where they are at in the world.

Science- See last week’s lesson.

Leader in Me- Wrapping up our Habit 1: Be Proactive unit in our First Class lesson. We also will discuss being a Transition Person. A Transition Person replaces reactive, unhealthy, and harmful behaviors with proactive, helpful, and effective behaviors. A Transition Person models positive behaviors and passes on effective habits that strengthen and build others in positive ways.

Upcoming Events

Tuesday- PTA Meeting at 4 pm.

Wednesday- First Class and Assembly

Thursday- Module 1 Mid-Module Review

Friday- Module 1 Mid-Module Assessment, Fire Station Field Trip 9:30-11:30, and PBIS Reward Party

Zearn and Reading Log Homework

Over the course of this school year the third grade team is working together to make sure your child is meeting their W.I.G.S. (wildly important goals).

One of the many ways that you can assure your child reaches their academic W.I.G.S. is to make sure they are completing their Zearn lessons and reading log for the week. Listed below is some information about each of these requirements. Please make sure to go over them with your child.

Zearn

Zearn is an outstanding extension of our Eureka Math curriculum. This online program provides independent practice for students and allows them to receive differentiated math at their level. I

For third graders we are expecting students to complete 4 lessons of Zearn for the week. Students every morning will see their progress and track this within their leadership notebook.

While Zearn can sometimes be confusing, please see the attachment below to get a brief description of what Zearn entails. I have been going over them within the classroom, but this is a great tool to have at home so you can help out!

Reading Log

In order to become a better reader, you must read a lot! Your ongoing homework for English Language Arts (ELA) is to read a minimum of 100 minutes per week. This is about 20 minutes of reading five nights per week. You will make sure to document what you are reading Monday-Thursday on your Weekly Reading Log and then return it to Ms. Robey by Friday each week.

What can you read? You have total control over your own check. You may read any genre that you like, as long as it is a “Good Fit Book.” Books must also be appropriate for school and with your parent’s permission.

Where can I get the books? You may check out books from the Lindbergh library, the public library, take home small group books, or you may read books from your house. You will have opportunities to check out from the Lindbergh library once a week.

It is ultimately YOUR responsibility to have a book to read at all times. Plan ahead, “Begin with the end in mind.” Once you get close to finishing a book, make sure you have something else lined up to read next. If you need help finding a “Good Fit Book,” just let me know. I am more than ready to help out!

Math Homework for 09/30

Today in math your child continued to demonstrate the commutative property of multiplication by representing them with arrays. They also practiced related facts by skip-counting objects in array models.

For tonight’s homework please make sure your child completes Module 1 Lesson 8 homework from pg. 33 in their Succeed book. Their must do problems are 1-3 and all of problem 6.

As always if you need help with this concept please watch the video down below:

Chaperones Needed!

Good Afternoon!

As many of you know next Friday we will be attending our first field trip to the Fire Safety House in Dearborn. Today your child has brought home their permission slip. Please sign and return the permission slip as well as the simulation smoke slip to us by Monday. In order to be successful we are looking for 5 chaperones to attend this trip.

Remember that chaperones must have an up to date background check in the office. Please stop by and make sure that your background check is up to date.

Our trip will be on Friday, October 4th, 2019 from 9:30-11:30am. We are asking that chaperones are available at 9 am for this trip.

This trip is free and students will be back in time for lunch. If you would like to chaperone please email me as soon as you can.

Thank you so much!

Math Homework for 09/26

Good Afternoon Parents,

On our super busy day today, your child has practice using the commutative property using arrays. The commutative property showcases that no matter the order of the factors (numbers in a multiplication sentence) the product/total will always be the same.

Our homework tonight can be found in their Succeed book and is from Module 1, Lesson 7. The must do problems are 1-3, 4a-4c, and 5-6. Any additional problems are meant to challenge.

If you have any questions about the lesson please see the video below:
