Valentine Exchange

Valentine’s Day will be here before we know it! This year for we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 14th. On that day we will be doing various instructional Valentine’s Day inspired activities/games and passing out Valentines at the end of the day. Students will be allowed to pass out candy with their Valentines if they would like, however remember that we have several allergies!

We have a total of 25 students in our class, but please make sure to send in extra Valentines if your child is passing them out. I recommend if your child is deciding to pass out notes, please do not fill out the “to” section on the card. Instead just put your child’s name under the “from” section. This will help us pass out our Valentine’s in a more efficient manner. Please see the attached note for more details.

Thank you everyone for all of your support!

Weekly Update for the Week of 2/3

Happy February! I hope you are ready to kick of February with some extra kindness and love! Our Mid-Year assessments are finally wrapped up and we are excited to share with you our progress. Over the next week, you will receive your child’s data for their NWEA and your child will be creating new lead measures to help them work towards their next goal.

Due to many students being sick last week, we actually postponed our spelling test last week. This week we will continue spelling with last weeks words. This Friday, students will take their spelling test to assess their knowledge of the words. I have begun setting up spelling lists on Spellingcity. Feel free to use this resource to practice spelling:

Along with testing, I just wanted to give out a quick thank you for those parents who helped donate items for our Michigan Birthday Breakfast. The students had such a fun time celebrating Michigan’s big day.

Math Homework for 01/29

Good Evening Parents,

Today your child practiced representing the unknown in a multiplication or division sentence with a letter. This was somewhat challenging for some students.

Your child was expected to complete Module 3, Lesson 3 homework. Questions 1-3a.

Please review this concept with your child using the video below:

Weekly Update for the Week of 01/27

Happy Monday Everyone! Today was such an amazing Monday. We had the pleasure of attending the Native American Experience at our school. At today’s in-school field trip we were able to hear more historical information about the 3 Fires Tribes in Michigan and look at artifacts and replicas from the time period. Our experience ended with us being able to go around and touch items and even try things on. I was able to take some pictures and I will be posting some of them after this post. So stay tuned !

Along with the awesome field trip, your child brought home their report card today for the second card-marking. Please sign and return the envelope tomorrow. As always if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and we can set up an appointment to go over any thoughts that you have.

This week we will be wrapping up our mid-year assessments. Please check your child’s planner for their updated NWEA score. At the back of the planner, you will see a chart that documents their expected RIT score and then the score they were able to achieve.

Remember to make sure to encourage your child to take their time and do their best. This little extra motivation goes a long way. Take the time to celebrate their successes!

Last week your child begun their multiplication timed tests. These tests are completed twice a week (all days beginning with the letter T) and will help students practice their math fluency. Based upon common core, 3rd grade students are expected to know their multiplication facts from 0-9 by the end of the year. This is critical for math success in upper elementary.

In order to make sure all students are ready, every week your child will complete a multiplication fact test at their level. Students will start at their 0s and 1s times tables, and gradually work up to their 12s times tables. After students have passed their test, they will receive a flash card set for the next level that they are working towards. If you ever have any questions about this process please let me know!

On Friday, we will also be having a Michigan birthday party for our great state. Please see the post from earlier today regarding this information.

Reading- Using informational text to discover how living things adapt to change. Practicing identifying nonfiction text features and discussing how they contribute to the text. Analyzing text structure and determining how compare and contrast structure can help a reader understand a topic deeper. Applying possessive nouns within writing.

Writing- Publishing their narrative fable. Introducing text-dependent writing with informational text. Students will be exposed to a writing prompt that requires them to cite evidence using an informational article. Students will work with the teacher to model how to correctly respond to the writing prompt.

Spelling- r-controlled words: arctic, born, carnivores, forest, form, forward, sharks, and sharp.

Math- Developing our 6-9 times tables using a variety of strategies: five strategy (using your 5 facts and adding the next number), number bonds, tape diagrams, and finding the unknown within a multiplication/division problem.

Science- This week in science we will explore the mystery, “How can you predict when it’s going to storm?” We will learn about differences between fair weather clouds and storm clouds, and the role of wind direction in determining whether a rain cloud will pass overhead. You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by looking at clouds together and asking, “What kind of clouds do you think those are? I wonder if it will rain…” Ask your child if they’d like to show you their Storm Spotter’s Guide, a small book they made to help them remember how to use the clouds to predict the weather.

Social Studies- Reviewing the early history of Michigan by completing a history timeline.
