Homework for tonight!

Just a friendly reminder that tonight for homework, your child is expected to complete a lesson on Zearn. Your child’s login information can be found on the inside of their planner! Zearn is a great site, since it is going over the math concepts that we are learning with Eureka Math. Please make sure to set some time out for your child on the computer tonight!

Tomorrow is a half-day! Don’t forget to come by at 11:45!

Tape Diagrams and Lesson 13 Help

What are these tape diagrams?! This might have been a question that you may have asked this week! Tape diagrams are math models that help students understand word problems in a new way. This is a new model introduced by Eureka Math. If your child is stuck, or would like extra help, feel free to watch this helpful video!

Mid-Week Sickly Update!

Thank you so much for being so understanding and flexible this week parents! I have been in and out of the building this week due to an upper respiratory infection and our class has been so kind and patient this week. I do apologize for the timing in regards to our usual weekly update. Without further adieu here are some things that we have been working on this week.

Reading: Continuing Characters, character traits, and how illustrations help us understand characters and mood.

Every child has a reading group.  They may read those books and add them to their reading logs.  Remember children should be reading 20 min. a night!

Writing: Beginning to brainstorm more Narrative Writing Topics.

Social Studies: Location (relative and absolute), the bodies of Water in Michigan, and the other landforms in Michigan

Science:

We continued our study of forces this week, this time by considering some of the forces involved in designing a bridge (as an activity your child designed and tested their own bridge made of paper).

One fun thing you can do to support this week’s learning is sit down together with your child and enjoy browsing through some of the world’s most intriguing and extraordinary bridges (see link). Based on what they learned in class, your child might point out to you where the bridge’s weight is supported. https://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/30-of-the-craziest-bridges-in-the-world

Math: Modeling division as the unknown factor of multiplication using arrays and tape diagrams, interpreting the quotient of division problems using units of 2-3.

** Remember I have videos posted to help your child please watch them!

Also, I’ve had a few questions regarding Sprints and Fluency Patterns.  These are timed they do one then they do the other.  Sometimes in the same day sometimes one one day and one the next.  They are NOT graded.  They are to make your child feel successful that they are beating their score.  Please do not be upset that your child hasn’t gotten through them all.  This is a new program but I will mention that many students are not keeping up with the homework.  I have talked to them and will be sending homework not turned in throughout the week.  Today they should have brought home Lesson 13.

Leader in Me:  Wednesday our class will be talking about producing quality work and being responsible.  When the return home ask them “How do you know when you have produced quality work?”

Good Afternoon Parents!

This is just a friendly reminder that tomorrow will be our class field trip to the Dearborn Fire Safety House. We will be leaving promptly at 9:30 for the field trip and will be returning by 11:30. Zearn Online Math Support

I’m excited to share that our class is using Zearn Math this school year. Zearn Math is a top-rated math
curriculum that personalizes learning for each student. With Zearn Math, your child will learn and
practice math concepts in two ways – Small Group Instruction with me and Independent Digital
Lessons. By learning in these two rotations everyday, every student in our classroom will deeply learn
the big ideas of math for our grade.

• While working through Independent Digital Lessons, your child will learn and practice new
concepts at his/her own pace. Independent Digital Lessons include fun warm-ups to build math
foundations, interactive videos to learn new concepts, paper and pencil work to transfer learning,
and lots of supportive, precise, and personalized feedback.

• During Small Group Instruction with me, each student discusses their reasoning aloud, works
with concrete objects to demonstrate their thinking, and receives feedback on their
understanding. Teaching in a smaller group allows me to do an even a better job meeting the
specific needs of your child.

I encourage you to explore Zearn Math with your child to learn more.

Visit www.zearn.org and enter your child’s username and password. Their password can be found inside their planner on the back of the front cover. Listed below is our class code:

Class Code: AX7T9C

Here are some questions to ask your child to support their learning with Zearn Math!

  • What did you discuss with your teacher and friends in math small group time?
    • What concrete materials did you get to learn with in Small Group today?
    • What are your favorite parts of a Digital Lesson?
    • When you get a challenging problem, how do you work through it?
    • How many Digital Lesson badges have you earned?

Need Books to Read at Home? Try EPIC!

Dear Parents,

This year Dearborn has decided to not use MyOn for Online Books. However, I have signed up our class to access free books using Epic. Feel free to follow the directions with your child to get them signed up for Epic. You will also receive e-mails regarding their progress. We will be using this site quite a bit at school, but I was too excited not to share it with you as well! Hopefully this helps with their reading logs!
