I am so excited to kick off this years’ Kids Heart Challenge Program (formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart)! Our kickoff assembly will be on Wednesday, January 9^th at 9AM.

One of the fun incentives we are going to do with the students this year is have a Classroom Competition! The classroom with the most students registered for the program will earn a $25 Gift card & recess kit from the AHA to host a party and extra PE time from me!

All you have to do is encourage your student to get registered online! When the students register online they will be asked to take 1 of 3 challenges

1. Choose water over sugary drinks
2. Be Active for 60 minutes a day
3. Do a good deed daily

Tomorrow our class will be having lots of grinchy fun! We will enjoy math and literacy activities all centered around The Grinch!

Your child is welcome to dress up for this fun day. Ideas include: wearing green, trying out some Who inspired hairdos, or wearing antlers like the Grinch’s dog Max to name a few. Have fun and Merry “Grinchmas”!!

The last week of 2018! Can you believe it?! This week is quite the festive week. We have a wide variety of activities that we are doing this week that will surely bring the Holiday Cheer.

This week we are kicking off a Random Act of Kindness  (RAK) Week. Students will be giving back this holiday season by doing a random act of kindness each day as a Kindness Elf. Ask your child what the RAK activity is for each day!

Along with the RAK week, our class will be receiving 5 gifts from Ms. Robey for the 5 days leading up to Winter Break. Today, your child received a week that is homework free! Keep asking about these friendly gifts that they receive!

We also will be having a festive Holiday Party this Friday from 2:30-3:15. Please see the Holiday Party Post for more info!

Reading- Comparing and Contrasting, Point of View, and Character Traits. Students also will be discovering verb tenses and antonyms this week! A special Grinch Day will be this Thursday to celebrate holiday cheer!

Writing- Holidays Around the World Research and Project. Remember our project is due this Friday! Holiday Celebration will be held Friday afternoon!

Science- Climates within America and engineering weatherproof buildings ! Our test will be held on Wednesday. Study Guides went home last week, and are on the blog if needed.

Social Studies- Native American Legends and French Explorers

Math- Rounding two digit and three digit numbers to the nearest ten and measurement

Spelling- No spelling this week.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! To celebrate the holiday season, we will be having our classroom holiday party this Friday at 2:30-3:15.

Students will be participating in a secret Santa, eating snacks, playing games, and watching a holiday movie!

Good Evening Parents,

Part of our math program this year includes having students start to master their multiplication math facts. Research supports fact memorization because it frees up the brain to do harder, more complex thinking instead of having to figure out the math fact. This will come in handy as well once your child hits fourth or fifth grade, since they have to do multi-digit multiplication and division.

In order to make math fact memorization fun, I have started a multiplication race for our class. At the end of the year, students will get to participate in a multiplication celebration that includes an ice cream sundae to congratulate their hard-work!

Every Tuesday and Thursday your child will be given a 50 question multiplication quiz. They will get three minutes to complete all of the problems. In order for students to move on to the next set of multiplication facts, they must pass 49/50 problems. Your child will stay on that math fact until they have mastered it. All students will be beginning with their 0 and 1’s times tables.

As your child passes the test, I will send home flashcards for the next set of multiplication facts. Please make sure to have your child cut out and write the answers on the back. This will help them learn their facts. Please keep the flashcards in your child’s everyday folder. Practice the flashcards with your child as you see fit. We will also have time during our school day for extra practice at school. Keeping the flashcards in the folder guarantee that your child will have their cards so that they can practice at school.

I will be making this a fun adventure for your child. Together we will become Jedi (math) Masters (of knowing our multiplication facts quickly)!

Only two more weeks left in December for Lindbergh students. This year has flown by! We are working really hard this next week leading up to break. We will be passing out a hard copy of this unit’s science study guide. Students will be taking their science test next Tuesday. Please review the science tab for study guides and additional videos to help with science.

This week we will also be starting our multiplication race on Thursday! So keep practicing.

Reading- Reading informational text and comparing points of view. We will also be continuing parts of speech (noun, verb, and adjectives)

Writing- Online research for Holidays around the World project and starting typing out project

Social Studies- Native American tribes in Michigan and their culture

Science-This week in science we explored the mystery, “Why are some places always hot?” We learned about the idea of ‘climate’–that in every place on earth, the weather tends to act a certain way over the year. Your child learned how there are five basic climate zones: polar, temperate, mild, desert, and tropical. You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by talking about a friend or family member who lives in a different climate, and discussing how that climate affects their life. Or look for aspects of our local environment which show what kind of climate we live in.

Leader in Me- “Big Rocks” is a key concept of Habit 3: Put First Things First. Scheduling Big Rocks (the most important goals or tasks) first keeps us from allowing our little rocks (less important tasks) to take all of our time. In this week’s lesson, students discover:

-What is most important to them.

-The definition of “priority.”

-The benefits of scheduling Big Rocks first.

Good Evening Parents,

This month for writing your student will be working on researching a winter holiday from another culture! In order to live by Habit 5:Seek first to understand, then to be understood, we are taking a step in someone else’s shoes and learning how they celebrate a winter holiday. This week your child has picked from a list of six potential holidays: La Posada, Chinese New Year, St. Lucia’s Day, Kwanzaa, Diwali, and Hanukkah. They will be working on researching a new holiday and presenting the information in either a poster, slideshow, brochure, or paper.

While selecting the list of holidays, I tried to pick holidays that your child does not celebrate or may not be familiar with so that we can learn about other cultures. However, great leaders also try to find common ground between people! So to encourage this your child will also be comparing the researched holiday to a winter holiday that they celebrate.

We will be working on this project the entire month of December, with our culture celebration day on December 21st. Listed below you will find the rubric for the project, and the research packet that your child has in class. The research packet includes links to websites where they can find more information and informational sheets for each holiday.

The November reward is playing games with friends.  Students in grades K-2 may bring in board games from home, but please NO ELECTRONIC GAMES!   Make sure to label the games with your child’s name. Also, only send in games that your child already knows how to play (suggestions include: checkers, chess, Memory, Connect 4, Sorry, Candyland, Uno, Jenga).

Students in grades 3-5 have received permission to bring in their “electronics” as their game choice. The older students are very excited about this privilege!   Students may bring in DS games, iPods, MP3 players, tablets, etc. at their own risk.  We expect that students will only be playing “school appropriate” games.  Students who do not wish to bring in electronics may bring in board games.

Can you believe that it is already December?! Our class is getting in the holiday spirit this season with many seasonal events occurring this month. Make sure to check out the calendar and our blog for weekly updates about these events.

Listed below you will see what we are working on for this week!

Reading- Making connections between nonfiction text, nonfiction points of view (author’s opinion), and verbs

Writing- Researching winter holidays from around the world. Today your child picked out their holiday they will be researching this month. Rubric will be sent home later this week!

Math- Estimate and measure liquid volume in liters and milliliters using a number line, solving mixed word problems involving all four operations with measurement units, and mid-module check-point.

Science- This week in science we explored the mystery, “How can you predict when it’s going to storm?” We learned about differences between fair weather clouds and storm clouds, and the role of wind direction in determining whether a rain cloud will pass overhead. You can continue to support your child’s curiosity by looking at clouds together and asking, “What kind of clouds do you think those are? I wonder if it will rain…” Ask your child if they’d like to show you their Storm Spotter’s Guide, a small book they made to help them remember how to use the clouds to predict the weather.

Social Studies- The three fire Native-American tribes in Michigan, Native-American folktales, and settlers interaction with Native Americans.

The students of Lindbergh have decided to do two community service projects.  This helps out the community by us giving to those that are in need. We are sharpening our saw by helping our hearts.  Please consider giving to one of our projects.

1. Dearborn Animal Shelter

The Dearborn Animal Shelter is located on MIchigan Ave. behind the Police Station.  They take care of many unwanted pets. Due to the amount of animals they need our help.  The shelter is in need of many new items to help take care of the animals. Here is a list of a few needed items for dogs and cats. Cats need dry purina, dishes and cat clay litter- non clumping. Dogs need Nylon 6 ft. collars, pedigree(food). Both cats and dogs need new fleece blankets, toys and treats. We are collecting until the end of February. Put the donations in the box by the Auditorium.

2. Ronald McDonald House

The Ronald McDonald House of Ann Arbor provides a “home away from home” for families of children experiencing a serious illness or injury required hospitalization in the Ann Arbor area.

The Ronald McDonald House needs pop tabs to turn in and they can recycle them for money.  Please bring your pop tabs to school and put them in your classroom container. We are collecting until the end of May.
