Weekly Update for the Week of 02/11

Happy Valentine’s Week! This week we will be celebrating friendship and working hard! Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day in class. We will be doing our Valentine Exchange in the afternoon. In addition, listed below are some of the concepts we will be covering and big events this week!

Reading- Comparing different folktales, analyzing morals, and introducing concepts of dramas  (plays)

Writing- Developing a narrative story plot

Math- Multiplication and Division using units up to 9. Studying various multiplication strategies

Social Studies- The growth of Michigan and the growth of industry

Science-

The topic of this week’s science mystery was dinosaurs: how do we know what they looked like on the outside, when all we have of them are fossil bones? Why are we always depicting them as scaly lizards? Your child is learning how we can infer what the outside of an animal looks like, by using clues about their skeleton. We are also exploring how the structure of an animal’s teeth say something about what kind of food the animal preferred to eat (i.e. meat, plants, or both).

Dinosaurs are very exciting and so are likely to be a topic on your child’s mind these next few weeks. You can continue to stoke this interest by choosing to watch an educational program on dinosaurs together, such as Walking with Dinosaurs (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1762399/). If you have any toothed pets, such as a cat, dog, or even hamster, you can also invite your child to classify these living animals as herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore by observing their teeth.

Spelling- none this week!

Book Fair Update

This is a reminder that our Scholastic book fair will run from noon until 4:00 on Thursday. Since we missed school on Wednesday, we have decided to open for ONE hour on Friday from 12:30-1:30. Clean up will begin promptly at 1:30. If there is anything you would like to purchase, please make sure you come between the above times.  Thank you so much for supporting our school!

Update on Valentine’s Day Post

Good Evening Parents,

I just wanted to clarify a couple items in relation to the post below regarding Valentine’s Day.

The decision to not have a traditional Valentine’s Day party was decided on as a building. Even though as a building, we will not be having a party, I promise to make Wednesday the day of our Valentine’s Day celebration a wonderful day filled with many educational activities and ending with our Valentine Exchange. Thank you for being understanding and supportive of this.

If you have any further question feel free to email me.

Valentine’s Day in Class

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching Lindbergh, and we are so happy to celebrate. Sadly, due to the unexpected snow days and that I will be out for a professional development on 02/14, we will be not having a traditional Valentine’s Day party. On Wednesday, February 13th we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day by doing various instructional Valentine’s Day inspired activities/games and passing out Valentines at the end of the day. Students will be allowed to pass out candy with their Valentines if they would like. I will be bringing in an additional Valentine’s Day inspired treat as well.

We have a total of 22 students in our class, but please make sure to send in extra Valentines if your child is passing them out. The names of the students are listed below:

Yunes, Alaina, Adrianna, Jamillah, Charlotte, Martin, Nora, Mahdi, Jaxon, Adam, Marco, Aya, Jad, Aaliyah, Tatiana, Emersyn, Christian, Hussein, Nadine, Logan, Zachary, and Zoey.

Thank you all for being understanding and reaching out to help. I appreciate you!

Math Homework for 02/04

Today your child learned about how to multiply and divide with familiar facts using a letter to represent the unknown. For tonight’s homework your child was responsible for completing Module 3 Lesson 3’s homework problems 1-3.

If you need any extra guidance or assistance please see the video below.

Weekly Update for the Week of 02/04

I am so thrilled to have our first Monday at school in two weeks! Let’s hope we have a full week of school this week. I do appreciate everyone for being so accommodating and understanding last week with our three snow days! We will be teaching a lot of the same concepts from last week to help us catch-up!

Please remember to dress according to the weather or leave extra clothing in their lockers (hats, gloves, shoes, socks.. etc)

Reading- Comparing folktales and understanding the messages and themes

Writing- Reviewing story elements and brainstorming a story arch for narrative writing

Social Studies- Growth of Michigan within the lumber and farming industries

Science- This week we began a unit of study called “Animals Through Time.” In our first Mystery we explored the idea that the rock under our feet sometimes contains fossils. Those fossils reveal how habitats have changed through time. For example, fossil shark teeth and fossil starfish found in the center of North America are evidence that what is grassland today must have been an ocean in the ancient past.

You can help support your child’s learning by striking up a conversation about an exotic habitat you might have visited on vacation. If feasible, consider visiting the nearest science museum and/or quarry to see any local fossils that have been found in our region.

Math- Fact fluency for the factors 6-9. Discussing the properties of multiplication and division (commutative and distributive) using the facts for 6-9. Decomposing multiplication problems to make them easier to solve!

Spelling- content words: unknown, folktale, moral, fossil, and pioneer

word patterns /pr/ /tr/ /fr/ & /dr/- drum, frying, price, train, and printing

Leader in Me-  Habit 4: Think Win-Win is an attitude toward life- a mental frame of mind that says I can win, and so can you. It’s not me or you, it’s both of us. Think Win-Win is the foundation for getting along well with others and solving problems.
