Science Quiz

Good Evening Parents,

It was brought to my attention that some parents were expressing concerns with their child’s previous science quiz score that was brought home yesterday. I just wanted to take a quick second to ease some worries and concerns by clarifying a couple of items.

The first item is that I wanted to remind you was that this score was put into grade book as a quiz. Therefore this score will not be weighted as heavily as an end of unit assessment. The weight is very similar to a homework or formative assignment given in class. This is also being tied to the first portion of this unit which was given back in April. So this grade will be an accumulation of the first Animals Through Time Unit and the second half of the Animals Through Time Unit (which wrapped up April 29th).

The second item is that I always offer retakes on quizzes and tests in my class. I will be giving a retake of the science quiz next Wednesday at 8 a.m. in our classroom. If this is something you are interested in, please just let me know so I can make sure that I have a retake prepared for your child.

Lastly, I just wanted to let you know if you are unsure about what the question or answer was looking for when you are reviewing it with your child please see the Animals Through Time Part Two Study Guide. This study guide has the correct answers listed out for the quiz. You can find this under our Unit Four Tab. If you still have questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

My ultimate goal is to provide a quality education for all my students where they feel like they are learning. Mistakes are always used as a learning tool to help us grow (both students and the teacher). As a teacher, my next step is always analyzing student quiz/test results and planning my instruction around concepts that some students didn’t fully understand. Hopefully over the next couple of days we can fix any of those misconceptions that students had regarding this unit and help them achieve their best science self.

I appreciate all of the hard work that you parents do over the course of the year, and I truly understand how hard the end of the school year is with all of the testing going on. As a grade-level team, we try our best to spread out classroom assessments, district assessments, and state assessments. However around this time of year they tend to overlap quite a bit. If you ever have any concerns regarding an assessment or anything within the classroom, please never hesitate to reach out to me. I’m always willing to take feedback or concerns.

Thank you so much for always being so understanding and supportive.  I truly appreciate everything that you do for your child and Lindbergh Elementary.

Eureka Math Update

Good Evening Wonderful Parents,

Late last week your child began our very short Module 6 (only 9 lessons): Collecting and Displaying Data. I have just updated our Math Help page on our blog to include all the parent tip sheets, and an online component of their workbook pages. This will come in handy if your child forgets to rip out their pages from their Succeed book. Please feel free to use these resources to help with our math learning.

In addition, since this module is very short we will be having our math test next Wednesday. I will be passing out a paper copy of the study guide tomorrow, however the study guide is also listed here:

Module 6 Study Guide

Today your child completed Module 6, Lesson 4 in class. Students are only expected to complete problem 1 today. However problem 2, is a can do (challenge problem). If you need any additional help, please see the video posted below:

Weekly Update for the Week of 05/13

To begin this weekly update, I just wanted to take the time out to thank every parent in our class who made teacher appreciation week so special. I honestly went home moved to tears at how meaningful, generous, and thoughtful you all were. I’m so honored and blessed to have every student in my class this year. They are truly a big part of me, and I am going to be so sad to see them move on next year.

Reminder that this week your child will begin their NWEA testing for the Spring portion of the year. Students will be writing down their RIT score following their assessment, that way you can see how they are progressing on their W.I.G.s (Wildly Important Goals).

Please make sure to follow those encouraging guidelines that we had in place for M-STEP during testing days.

-Make sure to get a goodnight’s sleep the day before a test

-Eat a healthy breakfast

-Arrive on time to school

-Practice breathing strategies (bee breaths, bunny breaths, rainbow breaths, etc.)

-Use encouraging words with your child (You got this, I know you can do it, etc.)

-Send in an extra snack during the school day

I’m confident that every student has made progress this year, and are all going to do an excellent job!

Since we are testing this week, there will be no spelling this week. However, reading logs were sent home on Monday. Please make sure to keep reading your 20 mins. a night.

Reading- Discussing figurative language within reading and writing (similes, metaphors, hyperbole, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and idioms). DRA testing begins this week and NWEA reading will be on Thursday.

Writing- Creating a personal essay. Looking for big ideas and examples from their own life to add to a lesson/big idea in their narrative.

Math- Collecting and displaying data. Creating bar graphs, line plots, tally charts, and pictographs with data collected. Solving one-and two- step word problems involving graphs.

Social Studies- Social Studies test was given on Monday. We will begin our government in Michigan unit this week. Discussing the purpose of government and the difference between our local and state governments.

Science- This week we will learn about flowers: what they do for the plant, how they work, and more. We will solve the mystery, “Why do plants grow flowers?” (It’s to attract pollinators!)

You can help reinforce this week’s learning by asking your child to find a flower in the house, yard, or neighborhood. Ask your child, “What has to happen, in order for this plant to grow seeds?”

Spelling- No spelling due to NWEA testing

Leader in Me- Synergy is a process with many obstacles blocking the way. Cliques are one of the major obstacles to synergy. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be with those we are comfortable with, but it becomes a problem when our group of friends is so exclusive that others who are not like us are rejected. Make sure to ask your child, “How are cliques a barrier to synergy?”

Weekly Update for the Week of 05/06

Happy Monday Everyone!

I just wanted to say thank you so much for the amazing start to Teacher Appreciation Week. I absolutely loved the roses from the students, the students dressing up in Disney inspired gear,  and the adorable door! You brought me to tears a couple of times today! I’m one lucky teacher!

This week we will finish up our M-STEP testing for third grade. Please remember on test days to make sure your child gets extra sleep, a delicious breakfast, and shows up on time to school. We want to make sure everyone is ready to do their best and beat this test! In addition, if you can make sure to send in two snacks with your child on testing days that would be wonderful.

Since we are testing this week, we will not have a reading log or spelling words this week. We need to make sure these brains are rested. Listed below you will see what else we will be covering this week.

Reading- Wrapping up nonfiction reading and beginning our dive into figurative language. Discussing the difference between metaphors and similes within writing. DRA testing will begin this week and continue for the month of May.

Writing- Beginning our personal essay writing. Discussing what a personal essay is, and how do we apply our own personal examples in them.

Math- Starting our Module 6: Collecting and Displaying Data. Students will practice organizing data with tally charts, bar graphs, and pictographs this week. M-STEP Math begins.

Social Studies- Continuing our social studies unit on economics. Students will learn about interdependence and specialization, about the future of Michigan’s economy, and the role of the government in economics. The Economics social studies test will be on Fri. Listed below is the study guide for the test.

Science-

This week we will learn about flowers: what they do for the plant, how they work, and more. We will solve the mystery, “Why do plants grow flowers?” (It’s to attract pollinators!)

Spelling- No spelling this week due to M-STEP

Leader in Me- Habit 6: Synergize teaches us that when two or more people work together, they accomplish more than either could have alone. Synergy is more than compromise, which results in both people losing a little. And it is more than cooperation, where you basically double your options. Leaders go beyond cooperation to creativity, which results in achieving amazing and seemingly impossible results. Discuss with your child, “What are the benefits of involving others?”

Module 5 Math Test- Answers to Study Guide

Good Evening Parents!

I hope you all are enjoying this beautiful Sunday weather. Tomorrow we will be having our Module 5 Math test. I do apologize for where the test is, considering we are taking M-STEP this week. Even though M-STEP is occurring, our curriculum must go on. So I appreciate all the hard workers out there making this happen. We are almost to the finish line!

Last Friday I posted the study guide for Module 5 on our blog, and last week your child spent some time in class working on the study guide during school hours. However, I know sometimes with study guides it is helpful to see what the teacher is looking for. Since this is the case, listed below you will find the study guide answer key. Please use this as a way to check the study guide with your child.

As always if you ever need anything, please feel free to reach out to me.

I just wanted to take the time to thank all of those parents who helped out today and came out to support our class during our Poetry Slam. The students really enjoyed having a true audience at the Cafe’ Robey. I’m so honored to have such an amazing support system for our classroom. We truly could not do this without you.

Also, thank you to Mrs. Khatri as well for bringing in snacks for the students for M-STEP. We greatly appreciate your generosity and our stomachs/brains thank you!

Weekly Update for the Week of 04/29

Good Evening Parents,

I hope you are having a calming rainy Monday! This week is the BIG week. We begin our end-of-year assessment period. Since testing is a big part of the next two weeks, you will notice that our homework load will be a lot lighter. There will be no spelling and no reading log for the next two weeks. In some cases there will also be no additional math homework being sent home on test days only. If you ever have a question about homework, never hesitate to ask.

Tomorrow will be the first day of M-STEP testing, please make sure your child goes to be early today, gets a great big breakfast tomorrow, and is on time for school. In addition to getting breakfast, please send your child with 2 snacks tomorrow. We will be eating snack during the test and again in the afternoon.

I wanted to also invite you to attend our Poetry Slam tomorrow. From 2:15-3:15 your child will be hearing some of their classmate’s favorite poems and even performing their own poem in front of the class. Remember that the students also need to bring in an illustration to share with the class as well.  We are going for a “Beatnik” approach. So feel free to wear black and/or a beret if you have one!

I’m also on the hunt for a book light ( the kind that you  clip on your book so you can read at night). If you have one at home would you please let me know! If not, no worries!
