Weekly Update for the Week of 09/03-09/07

I hope that all of you had a relaxing, restful, and fun Labor Day weekend. I was really happy to hear about many of your adventures today at school! Every week, I will be posting a weekly update that shares with you the content that will be covered this week, important dates, friendly reminders, and some recaps of things that have happened.

This week starts our beginning of the year assessments. Over the next few weeks your child will be taking NWEA and DRA assessments to see just where they are. These tools are used to help guide my instruction for the beginning of the year and gives us a great starting point to begin crafting a plan for helping your child reach their academic goals. This year along with reading and math, your child will be taking the NWEA ELA portion. This portion is used to assess your child’s writing, grammar, and language development.

Listed below is the NWEA testing schedule for our class.

Wednesday 09/04- NWEA Reading at 10:30

Thursday 09/05- NWEA Math at 10:30

Wednesday 09/11- NWEA ELA at 9:00

In addition to beginning the early assessments, your child will also begin our reading pilot program called Benchmark Advance. This year 3rd grade has been selected by the district to pilot the new ELA programs. These programs will encompass the writing, reading, grammar, and spelling curriculum that we will be using within the classroom. Since we are piloting two separate programs each third grade class will be using different materials. Therefore assignments will not be the same for each class.  We are very excited about this new opportunity, however we all will be learning together.

In addition, I will be sending home a parent letter and survey with more specific information about our program.  Please make sure to check for these letters in your child’s communication folder.

At any time if you have questions please feel free to reach out to me. I’m always only a phone call/email away!

Content Overview this Week

Reading- Introducing Reader’s Workshop expectations, choosing the “good fit” books, and understanding author’s purpose for writing text.

Writing- Introducing writing about their reading by using their reader’s notebooks. Showcase how to write in response to a text and how to correctly format a paragraph.

Word Study (Phonics)- open syllables, closed syllables, and final e syllable patterns (silent e).

Math- Beginning Module 1 Topic A: Multiplication and the Meaning of the Factors unit. We will begin by learning about how equal groups and arrays relate to multiplication.

Social Studies- Starting Unit 1: Geography of Michigan. During this week students will discover what is a state. They will also learn to discuss the location of Michigan using relative and absolute location.

Science- This week in science we will start our unit on forces, called “Invisible Forces.” Your child will learn how almost any action one can imagine consists of a push or a pull, or as scientists call them: a force.

In class your child was presented with a list of action verbs like “drag,” “lift,” “press,” and asked to decide whether they were pushes or pulls. You can help support your child’s learning by continuing this at home. Try applying it to actions that might be of personal interest, like the actions involved in a favorite sport (a throw, a hit, a slam dunk, a tackle, etc.).

Brown Bag Activity

In addition to the Haunted School Flyer, your child has taken home a Brown Bag Activity. This activity is an activity that I use to get to know your child on a personal level. The student will fill up their brown bag with either a picture, drawing, or an actual item to represent one of each of the categories on the bag.

Students were able to watch me do my own personal bag today. I would love to have all of the bags back by Tuesday, September 3rd. All of the items brought in will be returned after the student has presented their bag. If you have any questions regarding the brown bag, please feel free to reach out to me.

Listed below is the document that states what type of items the students are to place in their brown bag.

Michigan Photos Needed

Dear Families

In order to make our classroom a little more “homey,” we are looking for some personal touches to add to our classroom. Please have your child bring in at least 2 pictures on Tuesday, September 3, 2019.  One photo of somewhere in Michigan that you have visited, it can include your family or it can just be of the place. This will be part of our Social Studies Michigan curriculum.

Another photo of something or someone that is special to you.

These photos will be returned at the end of the year!!!

If you have any questions, feel free to email your child’s teacher.

Regards,

Mrs. Currie & Ms. Robey

Congrats Families! We have survived our first day back at school for the 2019-2020 school year!

Today your child brought home their everyday/take-home folder. This folder is a grey folder that will be used throughout the course of the year to communicate with you. Students will place notes, graded papers, and homework assignments within this folder.

This afternoon if you open up the folder you will notice I sent home our school lunch calendar and my third grade packet with information about our classroom routines/expectations. Please make sure you go over these items and place this packet in an extra safe space (the refrigerator is always a good place)! Tomorrow you will receive some additional paperwork about our classroom that needs to be returned, so make sure to be on the lookout!

Just a friendly reminder that if you have a change with your child’s dismissal plan, please contact myself and the office. If it is before the start of the school day, you are more than welcome to email me. However, when school starts I cannot check my email until the end of the day or on a special. The best way in this circumstance is always to call the office to let them know right away about the change. This will help make sure everyone is right where they need to be.

Lastly, tomorrow we will be having a full day of school. Please remember to send in a snack, water-bottle, and make preparations for lunch.

If you ever have any questions, please never hesitate to ask!

Welcome Third Graders 2019-2020!

I hope everyone had a great summer!!

I can not wait to meet each of you on Monday, August 26, 2019!

Our leader in me theme this year is “Be a Leader and color our future!!” 3rd grade’s color is green! We will be lining up on the number 6 spot tomorrow by the upper elementary playground. I look forward to getting to know your child and your family this year.

Parents, I post on this quite often! So please make sure to accept my blog subscription or subscribe! Also, your child will be taking home important notes next week, many will have to be signed and returned. I will be sure to have these notes on my blog as well, in case your child misplaces them!

Best,
Ms. Robey

Good Afternoon Parents,

Sorry for the technical difficulties of the slideshow link! I have since resolved the issue. The video is unlisted now, which means that anyone with the link can view but it will not be able to be searched for in the search tab.

Hopefully this helps! Have a great summer!
