Zearn-Math Homework 09/25

I’m excited to share that our class is learning with Zearn Math along with Eureka Math this school year. Zearn Math is a top-rated online math curriculum that is aligned directly with Eureka Math. The online components of Zearn allows me to personalize learning for each student. With Zearn Math, your child will learn and practice math concepts using Independent Digital Lessons. By learning with Zearn, every student in our classroom will deeply learn the big ideas of math for our grade.

While working through Independent Digital Lessons, your child will learn and practice new concepts at his/her own pace. Independent Digital Lessons include fun warm-ups to build math foundations, interactive videos to learn new concepts, paper and pencil work to transfer learning, and lots of supportive, precise, and personalized feedback.

I encourage you to explore Zearn Math with your child to learn more. For tonight’s homework, please work with your child to complete lesson 1. If you need any support from me, please reach out.

How do I login to Zearn?!

  • Visit www.zearn.org and enter your child’s username and password (this can be found inside the front cover of your child’s planner)
  • Join our class using the code: EF6G9A

Discussing Zearn with your Child

Here are some questions to ask your child to support their learning with Zearn Math

• What did you discuss with your teacher and friends in math small group time?

• What concrete materials did you get to learn at school today?

• What are your favorite parts of a Digital Lesson?

• When you get a challenging problem, how do you work through it?

• How many Digital Lesson badges have you earned?

Weekly Update for the Week of 09/23

Happy first day of fall! Can you believe it is finally time for sweaters, pumpkin spice, apples, and football of course?! Time has flown by in our classroom. We have been quite busy still perfecting our routines, expectations, and stamina.

Today your child has placed inside the back cover of their planner their NWEA scores. Last week I sent a note home regarding this tracking device. I do apologize that the scores were not implemented within the planner ahead of time. I still had several students who had not finished their assessments.

In addition to their NWEA trackers in their planner, your child also brought home their weekly reading log. Your child will bring a reading log once a week to track their 20 minutes of expected reading a night. At the bottom of the reading log, we would like the student and the parent to sign it and then turn in the form every Friday. Please do not sign this form until all the days of reading have been completed. Thank you!

Since weather is beginning to get colder, I just wanted to remind families about dismissal procedures.

  • Please make sure that it is communicated with your child and myself if there is a change in who will be picking up your child. If it is during the day and something comes up, please call the office and they will relay the message to me.
  • Parents and older siblings are expected to pick up students at 3:35.
  • If you have arranged for your child to play on the playground while they wait for their adult that is perfectly fine. However, we do need to know that this is a planned option for your child since after-school the playground is not supervised by an adult. If you have made this arrangement please e-mail detailing your thoughts that way we know what your dismissal plan is.
  • Our ultimate goal is just to make sure everyone is safe and accounted for after-school. Since weather is getting cold, we want to make sure students are left outside with the elements.

Lastly, listed below you will find some of the content learning goals we will be covering this week and some reminders of upcoming events.

Math- Discussing multiplication using units of 2 and 3. Discussing how division can be represented as the unknown in a multiplication problem. Identifying how you can model division using the array method. Demonstrating how to use the commutative property (turn-around facts) for multiplication

English Language Arts- Discussing author’s purpose for writing a text, beginning Reader’s Response journals, continuing DRA testing, and building upon the work on writing stations within reader’s workshop.

Social Studies- Starting Unit 1: Geography of Michigan. During this week students will discover what is a state. They will also learn to discuss the location of Michigan using relative and absolute location.

Science- This week in science we will start our unit on forces, called “Invisible Forces.” Your child will learn how almost any action one can imagine consists of a push or a pull, or as scientists call them: a force.

In class your child was presented with a list of action verbs like “drag,” “lift,” “press,” and asked to decide whether they were pushes or pulls. You can help support your child’s learning by continuing this at home. Try applying it to actions that might be of personal interest, like the actions involved in a favorite sport (a throw, a hit, a slam dunk, a tackle, etc.).

Leader in Me- This week we will discuss proactive language. Habit 1: Be Proactive teaches us that we control our response to situations and circumstances. The language we use is a strong indicator of our underlying proactive or reactive paradigm (thoughts). Awareness around our choice of words can help us identify and change ineffective paradigms. Make sure to ask your child, “What does proactive language sound like?”

Upcoming Events this Week

Thursday- Picture Day and Smoke on the Grill

Weekly Update for the Week of 09/16

Happy Monday Everyone!

I hope that you are ready for a wonderful week ahead. Our class has been quite busy developing future leaders. I did want to take a moment to say thank you for those parents being understanding for my absence today. Today I was out of the building due to Jury Duty, and had to miss being with the kids today. As a result of my absence, the students were asked to not turn in their math homework. Please send in their math homework from Friday to class tomorrow.

We will be continuing this week with our beginning of the year testing and practicing expectations within the classroom. Later this week, your child will receive their NWEA scores for the fall within their planner. I will be sending a note home soon regarding this information.

Listed below is an overview of what we will be discussing in class this week:

Reading- Discussing the expectations of a book talk with partners, active listening, and author’s purpose. We will be discussing the three reasons why author’s write: to persuade, to inform, and to entertain.

Writing- Setting up the Reader’s Response notebook. Discussing what an effective reader’s notebook looks like and how to write within their notebooks. We also will be starting to develop a persuasive letter.

Math- Understanding how multiplication relates to division. Diving into Topic B: Division as an unknown factor

Science- See last week’s update

Social Studies- See last week’s update

Leader in Me- Habit 1: Be Proactive. Discussing how being responsible for your work will benefit you as a leader.

Math Homework for this Weekend (09/13)

Good Afternoon,

To begin I just want to say thank you so much for everyone who attended Open House last night. It was so amazing to finally get to see so many new faces! I look forward to working with all of you this year!

Second, I just wanted to post that today your child learned how to interpret the factors within a multiplication problem. Understanding that one factor represents the amount of groups and the other represents the size of the group.

For this weekend your child has to complete Module 1 Lesson 3’s homework. The must do problems are only 1,3,and 5. The others are simply can-do extra help problems.

If you need any extra help, feel free to watch the video below:

Homeroom Parent Info.

Our tentative Homeroom Parent Mtg that was planned for Friday the 13th, will be postponed until next week to allow for our staff to obtain their parent volunteers and for the tentative homeroom parents to plan for the meeting.  I will send out an email directly to each parent as well as the staff about the date for next week.  We want everyone to be able to attend the meeting and allow our staff to fill their spots.

Thank you so much for your understanding.
