Science Lesson Today

Today students applied what they’ve learned about magnets to design their own magnetic locks!

We had the chance to compare both sliding locks and turning locks. Students were able to design and experiment with different methods used to lock their paper door. Students seemed really excited to create their own locks. If your child would like to rewatch the Mystery Science video and experiment more with their paper door, here is the link below:

Here’s something you can do to encourage your child’s curiosity at home: look for other products that use magnets! For example:

  • Do you have any bags, coin purses, or wallets that snap shut using magnets?
  • Do any of your drawers or cabinets stay closed using magnets?
  • Do you use magnets to hold things on your refrigerator?

Weekly Update for the Week of 12/09

Ho, Ho, Ho! Only two more weeks to go! We have the holiday spirit in room 212. There are many events and topics being covered in the next two weeks. Please make sure to stay tuned into our blog to be up to date on all of the events.

  • While we understand the holidays are very busy, please make sure that your child is completing their required 4 lessons of Zearn a week. As a third grade team we are noticing that there has been a strong decline of students doing Zearn since Thanksgiving. Zearn is crucial to helping your child succeed. Please make sure to keep encouraging your child.
  • “Dog Man:The Musical,” field trip slips went home today. Permission slips and money due on Thursday. Please see previous post for more information.
  • Santa Shop- Santa Shop is an optional shopping activity that will be occurring this week. Our class shopping date will be on Wednesday. If your child will be participating, please make sure that your child has money in their envelope (which was passed out today) with their name on it.

Listed below is the content strands we will be covering this week.

Reading- Analyzing how characters’ thoughts, feelings, and motivations change the story. Discussing how illustrations could also help us gather a deeper understanding.

Writing- Finishing developing main events for our fables. Begin drafting the introduction sentence and middle paragraphs.

Spelling- compound words: firelight, heartbeat, hillside, mountaintop, thunderclap, treetops, underwater, and woodstove.

Math- Mid-Module assessment and rounding to the nearest 10 and 100

“Dog Man: The Musical” Field Trip!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The third grade and third/fourth split class would like to announce that we will be taking a field trip to see a brand new musical called “Dog Man:The Musical!” This musical will be performed in our own backyard at the  Ford Community and Performing Arts Center on March 18th.

In order to reserve our seats (since this is a high-demand show), they are requesting that we submit our ticket payment soon. We are asking that you have your child turn in their permission slip and ticket money by Thursday, December 12th. The cost for the performance and bus transportation will be $12. If for some reason you are unable to meet this deadline, but you still want your child to attend please contact your child’s teacher ASAP. We do know this is short-notice, but this opportunity is too good to pass up!

In addition, since this is a high-demand show there are very few extra seats. As a result, we only have around 5 chaperones that we can take per class. If you are interested in attending the show, please check it off on your child’s permission slip. Closer to the date, we will hold a lottery to pull out the names of parents who can attend. These chaperones will have to pay to attend the show.

Around March, we will be sending home more information about our trip. In the meantime if you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

We appreciate your support with making this a great field trip for our students.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Currie, Ms. Knaus, and Ms. Robey

Here is a Sneak Peek of the show:

Stranger Awareness

Lindbergh Community

To ensure student safety and maintain communication, I am sharing the following information to inform and not to alarm you regarding an incident experienced by one of our students.

During dismissal, one of our students was walking home on North Waverly when a white Explorer with tinted windows started following him, it honked its horn at him and appeared to drive and stop as the student continued to walk.  It wasn’t until the student got to his car that the other car left.  The student did the right thing and stayed away from the car.  This incident has been reported to the proper channels.

Please make sure to review stranger danger with your child.  Below are a few tips if needed:

  • If students walk or ride bikes to school, it is best to do so in groups
  • Be alert of your surroundings
  • Identify safe houses and adults in the neighborhood
  • Report any suspicious activities to an adult

We appreciate your help as we work together to keep all of our students safe.

Adopt-a-Family Update

*Yesterday’s message included an option to write a check as your donation.  WE ARE NO LONGER offering this option. In an effort to streamline the process with such a quick turnaround, we’ve decided to accept monetary donations at Bingo for Books this Friday only. So sorry for the confusion! Thanks for your patience, it’s our first try at this kind of program

Greetings Flyer Families and Friends! We all know that the holidays are supposed to be times of togetherness and joy, but for many families they can be stressful and anxiety filled. The idea was brought to us to launch a drive to help a local family in need this holiday and everyone was excited to be a part of it.

So here it is Flyers…The First Annual Lindbergh Adopt-A Family Program!
This year we will be supporting the family of a local woman, recently divorced and living in supportive housing with her 7 children. She’s a graduate of Divine Child and works full time but is having a hard time making ends meet. The children range in ages from 6 to 18, two of which have a disability. Each family member took some time and wrote out a wish list. The lists are far from flashy and contain many simple necessities. Things like fluffy blankets and pillows, twin sheets, household supplies, boots and shoes. They also include fun things like footballs, Pokemon cards, scrunchies, Popsockets, gift cards and purses. We’d love to make this a holiday to remember for this family so here’s where we come in Flyers!!
We understand not everyone is able to get into the school to choose a tag so we’ve established 3 ways for you to donate:
1. Select a tag from the “gift tree” that we have placed in the lobby. Wrap the gift, attach the tag and place in the bins we will place in the lobby. Take some time to look at the tags, there are some good ones in there! Again, they aren’t flashy and many are only in the $5 range.
2. Drop a gift card in the office in ANY denomination (no gift is too small) to one of the following locations:  Target, Amazon, Kroger OR Aldi
3. The PTA will have a table and donation jar at Bingo for Books this Friday to collect cash donations, things already purchased and help with tag selection!

These are by no means the only ways to give. We are open to suggestions. The only thing that is FIRM is the deadline.
DEADLINE FOR DONATIONS IS DECEMBER 16th

We’ve already gotten things rolling with EXTREMELY generous gifts from Executive Dentistry in Dearborn and The Dearborn Goodfellows!(If you know of a Lindbergh family that could use some help this season, please contact Ms. Tiba or any PTA board member)

Questions/donation arrangements can be sent to:

Weekly Update for the Week of 12/3

Welcome back from Thanksgiving Break Everyone! I do apologize for the late weekly update. This first week in December we are diving deeper into subject areas and beginning new journeys into others.

Do you wish you could have some snapshots (pictures) of what fun activities students are doing in class? Well, you are in luck! One of our room parents, Mrs. Lewis, has been so kind enough to start a classroom Shutterfly website! The Shutterfly website is a safe photo sharing website. Only members who have subscribed and are approved can view the photos on the page. If you are interested in being apart of this Shutterfly website where you may see pictures of what your child has been up to, please reach out to Mrs. Lewis at ddoliveriolewis@gmail.com with your name, email, and phone number. If you have any more questions feel free to reach out.

In addition to this amazing website, please see the information below to see what we are working on in class.

Reading- Discussing how characters and their actions can change the story. Discussing character traits (positive/negative), introducing similes, and analyzing fables.

Writing- Brainstorming settings, characters, and plot for our own personally designed fable.

Math- Measuring and decomposing liquid measurements. Mid-Module Assessment on Friday.

Social Studies– Beginning our Early History of Michigan unit. Discussing the first native people in Michigan: The Three Fires Tribe
