Weekly Update for Week of 11/5

Happy Election Day!

Sorry for the delay in this week’s weekly update. Thank you to all of those parents who contributed an item for Holiday Boutique. Our basket is coming along nicely. If your child has not turned in their Made in Michigan Project, please have it turned in as soon as you can.

Over the next three weeks, student’s will be practicing showcasing their leadership binders for their student-led conference. When it is your time to have your parent-teacher conference, please bring your student. They have been working extremely hard to be ready to present to you all of their learning.

Along with getting ready for student-led conferences, we will be covering the following content below:

Reading- Reviewing our essential question; Why do people participate in government? Recounting the main idea within a text, using text evidence to draw inferences, and describing cause/effect connections

Writing- Performance Task Practice: modeling reading and analyzing a text, and answering two-part questions with performance tasks

Spelling- word pattern (long a VCe, ai, ay, a)- became, explained, favored, plain, raised, separate, swayed, and vain

Math- Beginning Module 2 Topic A: Time measurement and problem solving

Social Studies- Discussing Michigan’s natural characteristics and how we can use them, as well as how do humans interact with the environment and how we adapt to our environment.

Science- This week’s lesson on forces we will discuss the force of friction. Specifically we will consider the friction in the context of solving the mystery, “How can you slide faster down a slide?”

One fun thing you can do with your child to help support this week’s learning is to watch a video of this new invention, called “liquiglide.” This is a situation where removing friction would make your life easier. The grape jelly video is impressive: https://vimeo.com/89936192

Leader in Me- Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. This week we are working on developing our own personal mission statement. Our personal mission statement helps remind ourselves what type of person we want to be everyday. I highly recommend discussing this with your child and even creating your own!

We also will be discussing how to track your WIGS and how to hold yourself accountable on your lead measures.

Made in Michigan Project and Donations Due on Monday

Good Morning Parents/Guardians,

I hope that you are all enjoying your Daylight Savings Time extra hour! I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of those amazing parents who helped make our Halloween Celebration a successful event. The students had a ton of fun last week and I couldn’t have done it without you.

On Friday we had the opportunity to finish out our party by decorating our pumpkins. I will be posting pictures of that later this afternoon so that way you can see the creative side our students have!

Lastly, I wanted to give you a friendly reminder that our Made in Michigan project is due tomorrow. Please see the blog post at the top of the page for information about the project. I have also included below the worksheet that was supposed to be completed for this project.

In addition, if you are able to, we would like it if every student could bring in the product or item that they researched tomorrow. All items that are brought in by the students would be placed into our Made in Michigan Holiday Boutique basket. This basket helps fundraise for our entire school and the donation would be greatly appreciated!
