Weekly Update for the Week of 09/23

Happy first day of fall! Can you believe it is finally time for sweaters, pumpkin spice, apples, and football of course?! Time has flown by in our classroom. We have been quite busy still perfecting our routines, expectations, and stamina.

Today your child has placed inside the back cover of their planner their NWEA scores. Last week I sent a note home regarding this tracking device. I do apologize that the scores were not implemented within the planner ahead of time. I still had several students who had not finished their assessments.

In addition to their NWEA trackers in their planner, your child also brought home their weekly reading log. Your child will bring a reading log once a week to track their 20 minutes of expected reading a night. At the bottom of the reading log, we would like the student and the parent to sign it and then turn in the form every Friday. Please do not sign this form until all the days of reading have been completed. Thank you!

Since weather is beginning to get colder, I just wanted to remind families about dismissal procedures.

  • Please make sure that it is communicated with your child and myself if there is a change in who will be picking up your child. If it is during the day and something comes up, please call the office and they will relay the message to me.
  • Parents and older siblings are expected to pick up students at 3:35.
  • If you have arranged for your child to play on the playground while they wait for their adult that is perfectly fine. However, we do need to know that this is a planned option for your child since after-school the playground is not supervised by an adult. If you have made this arrangement please e-mail detailing your thoughts that way we know what your dismissal plan is.
  • Our ultimate goal is just to make sure everyone is safe and accounted for after-school. Since weather is getting cold, we want to make sure students are left outside with the elements.

Lastly, listed below you will find some of the content learning goals we will be covering this week and some reminders of upcoming events.

Math- Discussing multiplication using units of 2 and 3. Discussing how division can be represented as the unknown in a multiplication problem. Identifying how you can model division using the array method. Demonstrating how to use the commutative property (turn-around facts) for multiplication

English Language Arts- Discussing author’s purpose for writing a text, beginning Reader’s Response journals, continuing DRA testing, and building upon the work on writing stations within reader’s workshop.

Social Studies- Starting Unit 1: Geography of Michigan. During this week students will discover what is a state. They will also learn to discuss the location of Michigan using relative and absolute location.

Science- This week in science we will start our unit on forces, called “Invisible Forces.” Your child will learn how almost any action one can imagine consists of a push or a pull, or as scientists call them: a force.

In class your child was presented with a list of action verbs like “drag,” “lift,” “press,” and asked to decide whether they were pushes or pulls. You can help support your child’s learning by continuing this at home. Try applying it to actions that might be of personal interest, like the actions involved in a favorite sport (a throw, a hit, a slam dunk, a tackle, etc.).

Leader in Me- This week we will discuss proactive language. Habit 1: Be Proactive teaches us that we control our response to situations and circumstances. The language we use is a strong indicator of our underlying proactive or reactive paradigm (thoughts). Awareness around our choice of words can help us identify and change ineffective paradigms. Make sure to ask your child, “What does proactive language sound like?”

Upcoming Events this Week
