Weekly Update for the Week of 01/22

I hope everyone had a long restful weekend this past week. We are now about to embark into our third marking period! This marking period will be filled with more amazing curriculum and plenty of hands-on learning experiences.

We are still looking for chaperones for our Lansing field trip. If you are interested, please make sure you have an updated background check in the office and have turned in your interested slip to class by Thursday this week! We would love to have you join us on our adventure!

Today your child also received our SchoolMall packet. This  year our school is partnering with SchoolMall to help raise funds to purchase the essential tools needed in our school and classroom. If you could please support this program, our school would appreciate it!

Lastly, listed below are our “Big Rocks” for the week and upcoming events!

Reading- Folktale Unit of Study (recounting stories, identifying the theme/moral, and characteristics of a folktale)

Writing- Outlining our narrative stories and researching great narrative qualities

Science- Reflecting on our climate/weather unit and building upon our next unit “Animals Through Time.” In this unit students will develop an appreciation for how animals and the places they live (their habitats) are not constant—they have changed over time. Fossils give us a window to the animals and habitats of the past. Selective breeding shows us not only how some animals of the past became domesticated, but allows us to imagine how they might look in the future.

Social Studies- Beginning our next unit “The Growth of Michigan.” Discussing how farming and the lumber industry has grown Michigan’s population and economy.

Math- Beginning Module 3: Multiplication and Division with Units of 0, 1, 6-9, and Multiples of 10. We will be studying the commutative property to find known facts of 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Spelling- No spelling words this week due to NWEA testing

Leader in Me- Habit 4: Think Win-Win. A key concept of Habit 4: Think Win-Win is Abundance Mentality. An Abundance Mentality is the belief that there is plenty of success to go around. Make sure to ask your child, “What does thinking abundantly mean?”
