Weekly Update for the week of 10/15

Happy Monday parents! Can you believe that we only have three weeks left of this marking period?! Wow, time flies! This week we will be continuing our units of study. Please take the time to continue reading for 20 minutes a night at home! Your child should be bringing home reading books from our guided reading groups. Please make sure that you read with them their book! This is crucial to helping your child succeed! Listed below are some topics we will be covering this week.

Math- Relating arrays to tape diagrams to model the commutative and distributive property of multiplication, and discussing the relationship between multiplication and division

Reading- Book study on the book Stellaluna. Discussing character’s actions and words, summarizing, and asking questions of the text.

Writing- Narrative writing

Social Studies- Describing Michigan’s location, natural characteristics of Michigan, and human characteristics of Michigan and their connection to the natural characteristics.

Science-

This week’s lesson on forces was about the force of friction. Specifically we considered friction in the context of solving the mystery, “How can you slide faster down a slide?”

One fun thing you can do with your child to help support this week’s learning is to watch a video of this new invention, called “liquiglide.” This is a situation where removing friction would make your life easier. The grape jelly video is impressive: https://liquiglide.com/videos/

Spelling- content words: perch, clumsy, friction, climate, and product

spelling pattern (consonant digraphs): chop, three, fish, thin, and shell

*see spellingcity for ways to practice these words

Leader in Me- Transition Person is a key concept of Habit 1: Be Proactive. A Transition Person replaces reactive, unhealthy, and harmful behaviors with proactive, helpful, and effective behaviors. A transition person models positive behavior and passes on effective habits that strengthen and build others in positive ways. Ask your child, “What does it mean to be a Transition Person?”
