Homework and Reminders 12-10-19

***Today we took a NWEA screener (practice test) in MATH. On the post it note in your child’s folder it shows on top their score from when we took the test in November and on the bottom their score from TODAY!!! Almost everyone went up 🙂 :)– showing growth and progress in their math learning— I’m so proud of the way they took their time, focused, and tried their best using the strategies we have been practicing! Tomorrow we will take the NWEA screener (practice test) in READING. On Thursday, December 19th at 2:30-3:30 in the classroom we will have a Mandatory Parent Meeting to discuss NWEA screener reports and go over ways to prepare for the WINTER TESTING that will take place in January 2020 (Blue Note)—***Please make arrangements to attend this VERY IMPORTANT parent meeting!!**** Thank you!

***SIGHT WORD TEST COMING THIS WEEK!!!!**** 25 words!!! See practice test that they did today with their 3rd grade buddy. Test with me with me this week (Thursday or Friday)!

  1. Oakman Folder- sign and return behavior calendar for DECEMBER!

2. Reading bag- ***25 TOTAL***NEW SIGHT WORDS ARE IN THEIR BAGS— I, like, the, see, we,  go, can, she, a, atis, was, willhe, has, onin, and, you,  up, look, it, my, to, and dog. Practice each night to MEMORIZE THESE WORDS!* And work on using them correctly when speaking in COMPLETE SENTENCES for example: He (when talking about a boy) vs. She (when talking about a girl). And “on” like the book is “on the table.” ***BEGIN WORKING ON SPELLING THESE WORDS AS THESE WILL BE SOME OF OUR FIRST SPELLING WORDS!!!!!!!!!

3. READING GROUP BAG — BOOKS and fill in reading logs each day!!! Read and Re-read for fluency books to be ready to WRITE about our reading– work on letter sounds!!! (Also can you login code and password to read/listen to more books on the computer)

Please fill in log each day!!! Please use the pointer finger to put their finger under the first letter of each word as they read. Please read the book at least 3 times and sign the paper inside their bags so I know they did their job! Please send the reading bag back to school each day. ***IF YOU HAVE FLUENCY DOWN, PARENTS PLEASE EXTEND the reading by asking questions such as:

  • Find the WORD “the” on this page.
  • What LETTER/SOUND do you see/hear at the beginning of the WORD?
  • What LETTER/SOUND do you see/hear at the middle of the WORD?
  • What LETTER/SOUND do you see/hear at the end of the WORD?
  • After reading, can you RETELL what happened?? What happened in the beginning, middle, and end?
  • Over the Thanksgiving break fill out a Story Map which will be in their reading bag with their books. Please return with the signed log in their reading bags for reading groups.

4. Math Homework-MODULE 3 Lesson 7 on page 225 (homework helper is on page 223). 

5. POEM BOOKS– read all poems pointing at each word– I will collect books tomorrow!

6. NEW library books were chosen today— this are great books to listen to and work on comprehension!! Asking and Answering questions in COMPLETE sentences– here is our question word song: (Can you answer all these questions about your library book?!??!)

Read, Read, Read…. and work on “rainbow e” on CLEVER!!!<— this is a good way to practice for NWEA testing!!!

Important skill- knowing beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words… watch video to see how you could extend this skill to use with words in their reading group books!!!

It is also important to know the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words– for example “What sound is at the beginning of the word pig? (/p/) What sound is the sound of the word dog? (/g/) What is the middle sound in hat? /a/ Sometimes they ask for a blend, for example “What is the beginning blend for swamp? (/sw/) “What is the ending blend for wasp? (/sp/)
