2013-2014 School Year

2013-2014 School Year

Welcome!  My name is Mrs. Michelle Rawson and I will be your child’s Kindergarten teacher this year.  I am looking forward to a very rewarding year for your child.  This note includes information about our classroom procedures, so please keep it handy for easy reference throughout the year.

BIRTHDAYS

Students may celebrate their birthday here at school.  If you send in a treat for your son/daughter to share with their classmates, I will take it to the cafeteria and they can pass it out to their friends after they eat their lunch.  If your child has a summer birthday, they can celebrate their half birthday by bringing in their treat 6 months before their next birthday.  Large cakes are difficult to handle, so I ask that you do not send them in.  Cupcakes, muffins, or other individual snacks are better choices.

SNACK

Many children become hungry before lunch time, so we will have a SMALL snack each day around 10:00.  If you would like for your child to eat a snack, please send in enough to share with around 30 children at the beginning of the month if it is something that will keep.  If you want to send in fresh fruit or vegetables, send it in that day.  Fruit, vegetables, crackers, pretzels and other non-sugary snacks are appropriate.  Drinks are not necessary.

HOMEWORK

Please read with your child, or have an older sibling read with your child, 15 minutes each night.  He/she will be bringing home books at their independent reading level in a book bag every night.  This bag needs to come back to school each day.  Additionally, Reading and/or Math practice sheets will come home throughout the week.  This will be work they should be able to complete independently.  Students will also be bringing home math bags, just like their Reading bags.  These will contain fun Math activities that reinforce what we are doing in class.

SUPPLIES

Basic school supplies will be provided by the school.  However, many students find it more convenient to bring in some additional items.  The following items are supplies your child may wish to bring to school:

Backpack (a must)             Box of Kleenex (a big help)

Pencils                              Crayons

Colored Pencils                  Glue Sticks

Box of Ziplock Bags           Hand Sanitizer

CLASSROOM RULES

In order to guarantee your child, and all the other students in my classroom, the educational climate they deserve, students may not interrupt my teaching, nor may they prevent any other student from learning.  Therefore, here are the classroom rules and the behavior plan I use.

Rules:

1. Follow directions the first time they are given.

2. Be prepared with materials each day.

3. Raise your hand to speak and wait to be called upon, except during group work/discussion.

4. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

5. Treat everyone the way you would like to be treated.

Consequences:

1. Warning.

2. Green happy face turned to yellow. Lose 5 minutes of recess.

3. Yellow happy face turned to red. Lose 5 minutes of recess and phone call home.

4. Sent to office.

If student goes back to following the rules, they can go back to green and earn their recess back.

There will also be periodic rewards for the class to enjoy for good behavior.  These rewards may include:

Stickers                    Treats                      Extra Recess

Video and popcorn     Free Choice of Fun Centers

It is in your child’s best interest that we work together with regard to his or her school.  Therefore, I will keep you informed about your child’s progress frequently.

I have already discussed this plan with your child and would appreciate it if you would review it with him or her before signing and returning the last page of this note.

Please look through your child’s backpack every night to see the work that has been completed at school and to find important notes that have been sent home.  Praise your child when they do well and encourage them in their efforts.

Please make sure your child gets enough rest and has breakfast at home or here at school each morning.

Thank you for your help this year as we work together to ensure your child has the best Kindergarten experience possible.  If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to call me before or after school at 827-6500.

Thank you for your support,

Michelle Rawson
