Reading comprehension take 2!

This was from my last post on reading comprehension.  I am moving it here so it will go along with the continued information I plan to post regarding comprehension strategies you can use at home.

Determining importance= I understand the main ideas of the text and the author’s message.

  • What it sounds like…
  • The text was mostly about…
  • The author is trying to tell us that…*
  • I learned…
  • The important details were…*

Most of our reading at home tends to be narrative.  The two I put a * next to are great follow up statements to talk through with your child.  They may have a hard time with this at first.  You can model it for them!

Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is an important part of reading.  We want our children to be readers not “word callers”!  Over the next few school days I will be including things you can talk with your child about during reading to help expand their comprehension beyond the “who” and “what” the story is about.

Making Connections= I use what I know to understand what I read.

What it sounds like…

  • It reminds me of when I read… because…
  • It reminds me of a time I… because…
  • It reminds me of something I heard about because…

This comprehension technique helps the reader have a deeper understanding about the characters or ideas they read because they have related it to a life experience, be it something else they read of something they have first hand knowledge about.
