News for Week of February 2 – 6
Dates to Remember
Friday, February 13 – Class Valentine’s Party 12:30 – 1:30 pm. There will be a small Valentine celebration in our classroom. I am asking students to bring Valentine’s cards to pass out at the party. Please only sign your child’s name on each card. Do not fill out the “To” part. This will make for an easier distribution when students pass out their cards. A note will go home Monday along with a Valentine’s mailbox project.
Thursday, February 12 – Valentine’s mailbox project due. A note will go home on Monday with directions and ideas on how to create their mailbox. Student’s may use any type of box, bag, container, etc. that will hold cards during your child’s Valentine exchange. The container will need a slit for the cards and a way for your child to get his/her cards out of the container. Also, your child’s name must be legible on the outside of their mailbox.
Monday, February 2 – Groundhog Day. Will it be early Spring or more Winter? In your child’s homework packet student’s will make a prediction. On Tuesday, we will check if the groundhog saw his shadow or not.
Report cards went home on Friday. Please make sure you reviewed your child’s report card. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to talk to me. New concepts and skills were taught in the 2nd card marking and in the 3rd card marking we will be building on those skills in reading, writing, and math.
Below are some year end learning targets, so that you can see where we are headed in our curriculum. In Kindergarten we see the most growth by Spring. So, before you know it Spring will be here! Yikes! Time flies.
Math – students should be counting by one’s to 100, by ten’s to 100. In addition, students should recognize two digit numbers on a hundred chart and be able to write their numbers to 30 by year end. We are also practicing adding and subtracting numbers 0 to 5, and adding numbers to make 10 by year end.
Writing – students should be writing three sentences or more by year end. Students are progressing in writing as we are learning to write a beginning, middle, and ending sentence to go along with a three part picture plan in a narrative writing piece.
Reading – currently, all students have progressed in reading and have moved a level or more in reading. By year end student’s should be reading at a DRA level 4 or more. Sight word fluency is important to reach this reading goal. Please practice reviewing the Dolch Pre-primer and Primer sight word list that was distributed at the parent teacher conference in the fall. I will send out the Dolch sight word list again for home practice.
NWEA testing – Students will finish testing in math this week.
Spelling Words – “et” family bet get pet sight words – me my red
Spelling Notebooks – if your child did not turn in their spelling notebook on Friday, please make sure they turn it in on Monday. A new word list will go in the spelling notebook. Please keep in mind when your helping your child write their sentences: 1. write a short sentence. 2. stretch sounds and write down the sounds they hear. 3. have your child write one sentence a night using one of their spelling words. (It may be difficult for some to write all their sentences at one sitting).
Blue Folders/Red folders – please make sure your child turns in their blue folder each day in the morning and turns in their red folder on Monday.
Book bags – some book bags went home on Friday. If your child did not bring home a book bag on Friday, they will bring one home on Monday.
Stay warm and safe on this wintry day.
Mrs. Polgar
